The illegal immigrant accused of killing 18-year-old Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman appeared in court Monday in a hospital bed after collapsing, according to his attorney.

Jose Medina-Medina, the Venezuelan national charged with Gorman’s murder, did not appear in person for his arraignment before a Cook County judge. Instead, he joined the case remotely via Zoom at a local hospital, where his lawyer said he was admitted after collapsing over the weekend.

The judge ordered Medina to appear in person at the next court hearing if he is fit.

Defense attorneys have repeatedly argued that Medina suffered seizures and other health problems stemming from a 2018 shooting in Colombia, where they say he was shot in the head.

On Monday, Medina’s lawyer told the judge that the defense is waiting for more information about his condition before deciding what pleas to enter before trial.

Meanwhile, prosecutors said the murder case is still ongoing.

They told the court that they have turned over additional evidence to the defendants, including multiple DNA tests that were completed on the gun found at the scene. Testing of the trace evidence is ongoing, and prosecutors said they may request additional DNA analysis depending on those results.

The prosecutors also said that they have submitted other evidence in a separate case accusing Medina of having a makeshift shack while he was incarcerated. They are still waiting for body camera video and hospital surveillance video to be added to the case.

The case was continued until September 3 for a new trial.
