Jenny Shin took a five-shot lead in the ISPS HANDA Women’s Scottish Open on Friday, as Lottie Woad, Charley Hull and Nelly Korda again struggled in windy conditions at Dundonald Links.
Lauren Coughlin, who joined Shin as the joint overnight leader at 6 under par, also struggled, going twice through her nine holes, before returning to the clubhouse at par, going to four under in 36 holes.
Despite a poor start, posting bogey the first time, Shin used her momentum from what was a sensational opening round of 66, shooting a five-under par 67 and taking a five-shot lead over Esther Henseleit for second at 11 under par.
“I made birdies when I could and I tried really hard not to make 3-putts,” Shin said, about matching his first-round score of 66.
“I’ve never had five leads before,” he added. “I’ll try to stay patient for the next two days. Golf is the links.”
Henseleit, who started on the back nine, pushed himself into second place on the leaderboard after making birdies on holes 16 and 17, before birdying the par-five par five to move to six under in 36 holes.
The cut line was set at 6 over par, and after Hull endured an indifferent opening round, shooting a 78, he went into his second round tiptoeing over the cut line.

The English golfer held his nerve, racking up four birdies and three bogeys to post a one-under par 71 to book his spot for the weekend, moving to five over 36 holes.
Her best friend and partner, Georgia Hall, couldn’t recover from a 10-over-par opening round and missed the mark after falling to 14 over after carding six bogeys and two birdies on day two.
Woad improves but struggles with the putter
Woad enjoyed a much improved second day at Dundonald Links after advancing to the doubles in his first round, after overcoming a poor start.
The 22-year-old made a double bogey on the 12th hole, but bounced back with back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th. He then added a bogey on the 16th, before making another birdie on the 17th hole.
“There was a good atmosphere at the start,” said Woad, the defending champion. “I made a double early. So I got two down there, obviously. Hit really good iron shots all day, fairways and greens.
Woad made the turn in two over, and two more birdies on holes three and five brought him back to level.

“I didn’t make the putts to be honest with you,” he added. “I could have shot a lot better, but I’m very happy with the way I shot today compared to yesterday.”
World No. 1 Nelly Korda, who started the day on a high note, dropped to four over at the end of her second round. Korda, who started on the back nine, went two holes under six before bogeying the 16th and following up with a double bogey on the 17th hole.
The four-time major champion birdied the fifth, but then made four consecutive bogeys in his final four holes to shoot a second-round 76 and move to four over par.
Solheim Cup captain Anna Nordqvist followed Korda down the leaderboard, after opening her tournament with two points in the first round at the bottom of the division. On Friday, Nordqvist shot a seven-over par 79 to drop to five over through 36 holes.
