Women’s T20 World Cup: Australia beat Netherlands by 98 runs to continue unbeaten start to tournaments | Cricket news

Australia maintained their winning start to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with a comfortable 98-run victory over the Netherlands at the Hampshire Bowl.

After opening the tournament with wins over South Africa and Bangladesh, six-time champions Australia finished third in Group A in a tournament record on Saturday.

After batting first, Australia posted 219-6 in 20 overs with the Netherlands managing only 121-3.

England amassed 219-1 against Sri Lanka in the opener at Edgbaston last week.

Top batsman Beth Mooney scored 74 off 42 balls for Australia but had to pull out with a back strain.

Her total was joined by solid performances from Ashleigh Gardner (58) and Georgia Wareham (41), before Kim Garth (2-20) and Annabel Sutherland (1-23) took wickets in the Dutch chase.

Mooney earned man of the match honors and said of his forced exit: “I’m fine. Just a note, maybe I wasn’t used to taking the bus we’ve been doing.

“The trip to Southampton is a long one, so I’m looking forward to that again tomorrow!

“As an opening batter and a top-order batter, your job is to get runs so, in my opinion, I did my job well today.

“We had a good partnership there, first with Georgia Voll and then Ash Gardner. I thought we were perfect and the bowlers did a great job of restricting them to 120.”

The Netherlands have lost all three of their group matches so far in their first tournament, although Babette de Leede starred in their innings with an unbeaten 56 off 57 balls in her historic 100th T20I appearance.

Robin Rijke also celebrated reaching the same milestone.

De Leede and Sterre Kalis put on 96 off 91 balls from the fourth to 19th over. Kalis, who went 21 and 40, threw 44.

“This is a big moment for us,” said de Leede. “Australia is a quality team [so] to read from them, see how they do with their innings, it’s amazing. “

Australia will next face Pakistan at Headingley on Tuesday evening, while the Netherlands will play South Africa in Bristol on Thursday.
