Liverpool’s Koumas vows to prove useful against Wales

At just 19 years old, Lewis Koumas has achieved a lot in senior football.

The striker helped Hull City secure promotion before returning to parent club Liverpool and has racked up a career-high 11 points for Wales.

But the talented youngster is humble enough to know that his journey in football is far from over, especially when it comes to his national team.

“I really don’t think so [Wales fans] I’ve seen something in myself to be honest,” he told BBC Sport Wales ahead of his team’s games in June.

“I’ve had cameos where I’ve tried to prove myself so I need to work hard and show more to try to earn the miller’s trust.

“Hopefully I can do that and I want to show what I can really do in a Wales shirt.

“I definitely want to be a top player at the top level and in the world I want to play as much as I can for Wales.”

Vowing to show Wales fans what he is all about, Koumas did just that as he headed Neco Williams into the net in the final minutes to earn Wales a 1-1 draw with Ghana at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night.

It ensured he got his goal tally and worked almost two years since he made his international debut under Robert Page against Gibraltar in June 2024.

Koumas – who is the son of Wales midfielder Jason Koumas – has been a regular in the squad under current manager Craig Bellamy, and is now set to force his way into the 11.

“He’s really supportive, he’s a great coach,” Koumas said of Bellamy.

“Ultimately I like to try to see what I can take from his game and put it into mine because he was a good player and he scored goals and that’s exactly what I want to do.

“He’s a great role model in practice and having him here every day when I get called up to camp is a blessing.”

Koumas spent the first half of the 2025-26 season on loan at Birmingham City – where he made 25 appearances in all competitions, scoring once.

His spell with Hull in the second half of the campaign was successful as Koumas netted three goals in 19 appearances in all competitions to help the Tigers to promotion to the Premier League by playing in the final.

Of Hull’s post-Wembley celebrations, Koumas said: “One of the best days of my life for sure and memories that will stay with me forever.

“I am very happy with the way my development is going.

“It’s been a good two years. I think I’ve played about 110 games now so I’m really happy with how it went and I’m excited for the next one.”

The boy’s parent club, Liverpool, confirmed the sacking of manager Arne Slot on Saturday, 30 May.

But Koumas does not believe the Dutchman’s departure will affect his future – he is likely to leave Anfield again on loan.

“I don’t think the program is changing me,” he said.

“It’s just going to be, that I keep my head down, keep working hard, and if I impress, I impress. So let’s see what happens.”
