World Cup hero Ferran Torres hits back after criticism, posts photo wearing ‘Make Spain Great Again’ hat
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, the most successful tournament in the organization’s history, just ended when Spain beat Argentina in extra time to win their second title.
It was the result of a remarkable defensive performance from the Spanish national team, a run in which they only allowed one goal in the entire tournament. Despite facing Belgium, who arguably have the most talent in the world, France, and Argentina with one of the best goalscorers in history, Lionel Messi. But it wasn’t one of the defenders who grabbed the headlines afterwards, it was cup-winning goalscorer Ferran Torres.
Torres said after the game that he felt the goal was the result of the support of the Spanish people.

“I think that in the end the goal came from 47 million people [the estimated Spain population]not just us who are here,” said Torres speaking to FIFA broadcasters after the win, according to ESPN. “Today the end is written, we are meant to win. We are far from our people today but we have tried to be as close to them as possible.”

Then, during the parade, he was photographed wearing a red “Make Spain Great Again” hat, a reference to President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. Criticism from the political left was swift and furious.
The deputy spokesman for the leftist party “Sumar” in Spain quickly accused Torres of speculation about the residence, as just one example. Progressive media outlet El Plural said his hat was “a clear ideological message, causing a lot of criticism” on social media.

However, Torres did not hear the criticism or he did not care, because in a new post on X from Tuesday evening, he sent several photos of the show, with a bright hat.
The caption, “Somos los reyesssss! Vaya locura!,” roughly translates to “We are the kings! It’s crazy!”

It is still unclear whether Torres meant to wear the hat as a nod to Spain’s right wing, as an attempt to mock Trump, or if it was just a happy nod to the president presenting the trophy to the national team. Although it seems that most commentators and left-wing politicians take it as a statement of support for the reform of the country, it is currently under the left-wing socialist government led by Pedro Sanchez.
A YouGov poll in June found Sanchez had an approval rating of just 33%, with 63% holding unfavorable views. Perhaps this was the result of his plan to grant residence permits to illegal immigrants in Spain. Which, given Trump’s stance on immigration enforcement, seems to go with the “MSGA” hat.

However, it is telling that the Barcelona star has not apologized for wearing it, despite the criticism.
