England beat India by 27 runs in run-fest at Lord’s to win 2-1 ODI series | Cricket news
Ben Duckett’s century and Sam Curran’s late wicket burst propelled England to a 27-run series win over India in the third ODI at Lord’s.
Duckett hit 141 off 135 balls, his highest ODI at Lord’s and his fourth century in the format, before Jos Buttler’s 41 off 13 balls helped England post a difficult 387, allowing India to win by 388.
Rohit Sharma led the chase with a superb 138 off 110 deliveries, registering his 34th ODI century and sharing century partnerships with Shubman Gill (77) and Virat Kohli (74) to keep India on course.
India were 303-2 and needed 84 from the last 39 balls when Curran (4-75) removed Ishan Kishan (14), Shreyas Iyer (0) and Kohli, halting India’s momentum as their chase came to 27 runs.
After losing the first match of the series by six wickets at Edgbaston, England bounced back to win the ODI series 2-1 against the world’s top-ranked team, adding to the 4-0 T20 series whitewash of India.

Harry Brook completed a successful innings with his third toss of the series, and his batting decision reaped immediate benefits as England’s openers feasted on an Indian attack left without a pin except for pace talisman Jasprit Bumrah.
India were made to work hard on the field as England posted a record 192 runs for the first wicket before Bethell picked Rohit Sharma off the cow corner to score nine runs before an emotional century on the day the King remembered Sir Garfield Sobers.
Duckett continued after reaching his century, hitting 18 fours and a six to surpass Sir Viv Richards’ 138 not out against England in 1979 and register a new highest ODI score at Lord’s before falling to Prince Yadav.
Jos Buttler scored back-to-back ODI half-centuries after Duckett’s dismissal before Jos Buttler’s four fours and three sixes in the over saw England plunder 82 runs in the last five overs to finish on 387-3 after winning 50 overs with the bat.
It left India needing the second-highest run-out in ODI history to win the series, but confidence grew that it was possible when Rohit and Gill put on an opening stand of 147 runs.
Gill also suffered a cramp that forced him to retire from the first ODI at Edgbaston, and four overs after receiving treatment the Indian captain was trapped lbw as Adil Rashid got a crucial breakthrough with his first wicket of the series.
Rohit closed out his eighth ODI century on English soil in an 84-ball 113-run stand with Kohli, as India’s batting duo looked for a final chapter in what could be their final international match in England.
Bethell (1-49) bowled Rohit, delivering a crucial breakthrough to reduce India to 260-2, but Kohli’s first fifty at Lord’s either way kept the visitors on track.
But Curran’s late brilliance thwarted India’s chase as they were restricted to 360-7 in 50 overs, England’s fifth win in six matches and second ODI win over India since 2012.
