France vs. England live streaming: How to watch FIFA World Cup third place, odds, predictions, picks, list

In a match built on heartbreak, France and England will compete for third place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday.

There is something strange about third place games. It’s a game that no one wanted to be a part of at the end of a major tournament, yet it’s a chance to walk away with some bragging rights. Although these are two teams that already have plenty of that. France is the 3rd ranked team in FIFA in the world, followed by England in 4th place, and after not being able to enter the semi-finals, these two teams have to settle for a bitter place in the end.

After four years and five weeks of work, convinced that the final game was close, the two teams will push each other in Florida, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Neither team wants this game, but with third place and national pride at stake, and individual awards on the line, there could be plenty of fireworks at the end.

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming game:

The last meeting

Saturday’s third-place match is the 33rd all-time meeting between France and England, and will be a quarterfinal replay for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It will also be the first meeting between the two sides since then France knocked England out of that 2022 tournament.

The quarterfinal in Qatar was full of drama, including two penalties. During the match, French midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni opened the scoring with a superb strike from distance in the 17th minute, and Les Bleus took the lead going into the break. England responded quickly in the second half, with a penalty won by Bukayo Saka, then scored by Harry Kane to equalize the game in the 54th minute.

Olivier Giroud gave France a goal again with a header in the box late in the second half, which ended up being the winner after another penalty attempt by Kane went over the bar in the 84th minute. France would go on to win the semi-final against Morocco, and then reach the final of the 2022 World Cup, where they finished second to Argentina.

How did they get here

France is ready to advance to the World Cup so much so that it has already lined up the next coach. Zinedine Zidane is likely to take over from Didier Deschamps after the conclusion of the tournament.

France’s run in the third place match was like an engine running against a brick wall. Les Bleus topped Group I with wins over Senegal, Norway, and Iraq. Then it went on to the knockouts, defeating Sweden (3-0), Paraguay (1-0), and Morocco (2-0). But during the quarterfinals, France’s high-flying attack exploded. After outscoring their opponents 16-2 in six games, they could not get past the Spanish defense, losing 2-0, and now they will play for consolation prizes.

England’s approach may have been less dramatic, but it was just as entertaining. Coached by Thomas Tuchel, the Three Lions find themselves in the same situation, not playing in the World Cup finals. However, they are in a position where the other 42 teams might enjoy playing in, the bronze medal game.

After winning Group L, with wins over Croatia (4-2), Panama (2-0), and a draw against Ghana (0-0), England’s World Cup journey to the third-place play-off has been very good. The team was pushed to the edge of the knockout round with narrow wins over DR Congo (2-1), Mexico (3-2), and Norway (2-1). They held a one-goal lead against Argentina in the semi-finals after Anthony Gordon’s goal in the 54th minute, but dropped the game in the final seven minutes when Argentina scored twice to win 2-1.

Manager Thomas Tuchel admitted the change had taken place, while captain Harry Kane called the result “getting old.” With their first World Cup finals appearance since 1966 slipping away in brutal fashion, Saturday’s third-place game at Miami Gardens is little more than an insignificant addition to what could have been a historic run.

Who will play in the third place match?

It is difficult to measure after both teams expressed their disappointment in playing this match. Combined with a number of injuries to each line-up after a few weeks of intense competition and tough semi-finals saw many players withdraw due to injury.

Chances are that neither team will have the strongest starting lineup on the field. Both Didier Deschamps and Thomas Tuchel are expected to make changes as title hopes fade away, using the game to manage fatigue and reward teammates for minutes.

This game is Deschamps’ farewell, and there are already rumors of Tuchel, so look out for the underused players in this game.

Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham are in contention for the Golden Boot, both with six goals, but they will need impressive performances to overtake Kylian Mbappe or Lionel Messi, who lead the race with eight goals each.
