At nearly 42 years old, LeBron James Is More Important in the NBA and Banks than on the Court.

When it comes to NBA players not named LeBron Raymone James Sr., this latest version of The Decision is more about profit margins and balance sheets than picking and rolling.
And how old is this boy?
There’s something else about the Ageless Wonder that hasn’t been the Chosen One in years.

Consider James and the Los Angeles Lakers before he announced on June 30 that he wished to run elsewhere after previous stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers (twice) and the Miami Heat.
Now, without Googling: How many of those eight seasons did the LeBron Lakers lose in the first round of the playoffs even if they were a lottery team?
No, five.
Adam Silver didn’t care much as the commissioner of the NBA, and the same is true of his owner managers. Their league entered last season at a record $14.3 billion in gross revenue, according to Sportico.com. To hear Silver tell it, James is the main catalyst for that and helping the NBA prepare to fatten its coffers next season after choosing between the next few weeks, days or hours when it wants to take its free agent talents.

Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers. Those are James’ favorite landing spots, his chalk dust route and 24th season in the NBA.

Silver just wants a verdict.
“I think it’s all local politics. The way I think, we have to finish the plan,” Silver said this week at the CNBC Sport x Boardroom Game Plan Summit in New York, where he acknowledged that the NBA can’t decide who plays where and when in late 2026 and early 2027 until the fourth-ranked player’s $137.8 million decision. Forbes’ list of the highest paid athletes in the world.

“When LeBron plays, it will disrupt the program,” said Silver. “So I would like him to make his announcement, so we can finish the show, because, as you can imagine, the teams are calling us, the networks are calling us, and everybody wants to close the show.
“But it will have an impact on how we schedule, how we schedule opening week, Christmas Day, etc.
“So I need him to make a decision.”
First, the NBA has TV personalities to satisfy.
In July 2024, Silver and other league officials signed an 11-year media rights deal worth $76 billion, and LeBron’s fingerprints were all over the paperwork.

Next for everyone? The decision, and let’s start with the Warriors, ranked first Forbes’ list of NBA’s most valuable teams at $11 billion.
In Northern California, James would serve as another young man for the Warriors behind 38-year-old Stephen Curry and 36-year-old Draymond Green, a group of Naismith Basketball Hall of Famers. They’ll have box office appeal everywhere, but like the NBA’s senior citizens, they won’t advance past the second round of the playoffs.

What would be slightly better than team results is if James returns to the Heat, who rank eighth at $5.7 billion Forbes’ list of the most important NBA teams. Yes, the Heat got megastar Giannis Antetokounmpo, and they kept the talented Bam Adebayo, but that’s about the roster in motion.

LeBron to the 76ers?
It’s interesting.
76 is 10th you have Forbes’ The NBA’s most valuable team roster is $5.45 billion, and James will join an already explosive lineup of Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, with Embiid not wearing street clothes for a long time.
With James, the 76ers can stop “Trusting the process” to celebrate their first championship in the world since 1983 and Julius Erving.
Or they could be another blowout for the 76ers.
That said, James keeps stressing “family” about the decision. He is from Akron, which is 35 kilometers south of Cleveland, where he began his NBA career. He returned to northern Ohio after joining Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in South Beach for a few world championships.

Then, during Cavaliers Part II, James spent 2016 giving Cleveland its first world championship of any kind among the major sports leagues since the 1964 Cleveland Browns topped the NFL.

The Cavs feel like “family” to James.
James will join perennial All-Stars Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, but here’s the question: Can that combination push the Cavaliers past the Eastern Conference Finals, where they lost last season to the New York Knicks?
It’s arguable — or questionable — as this isn’t the LeBron of his Cavaliers Part I or Part II draft days.
See LeBron Lakers.
The LeBron Lakers captured the 2020 NBA championship, but that was star-studded. It came during the Pandemic “bubble” tournament.

As for the other two times the LeBron Lakers made the playoffs, they were swept in the 2023 Western Conference finals by the Denver Nuggets, and they were swept last season in the Western Conference semifinals by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
So much for the good old days for the man who said in June “I don’t take anyone for granted.” He was referring to the GOAT debate as to whether he is the Greatest of All Men Among Hoops such as Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.
You can make a case that James is equal in NBA history.
He is the leading goalscorer of all time. He has four world championship titles after 10 trips to the finals. He has four league and finals MVP awards. He was named an All-Star 22 times. He won three Olympic gold medals. He also became the NBA’s first billionaire with a net worth of $1.4 billion.

But there is also this.
He has grown up.
He will turn 42 in December, where he will continue to be an active NBA player manager, and I know it.
Jack Nicklaus won the Masters at age 46, and Tom Brady was 43 when he captured his seventh and final Super Bowl.
In addition, LeBron had an explosive LeBron vintage last season as the third option for the Lakers behind Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. He played in 60 of 82 games for the Lakers, and averaged 20.9 points per game outing, just six points below his career average. He is also close to his career averages in assists per game at 7.2 (7.4) and rebounds at 6.1 (7.5).
Besides, um.
Checks are cash.
For LeBron and the NBA.
