The 2026 Open Championship moves into the second round on Friday with a surprising name on the leaderboard. Jackson Suber took the lead at 5 under with a first round 65 in his only career round at The Open.
Suber won’t have long sleepless nights in the lead, which would be much better for his nerves. He’ll be one of the first to tee off Friday morning at 2:30 a.m. ET (7:30 a.m. local), giving him a chance to extend his advantage if he stays hot.
The leading early exit rider will be Cameron Young (-3), as he will set off at 4:58 am alongside Wyndham Clark (+3) and Ludwig Åberg (+1), each with work to do to secure a weekend time. In the group behind them, tournament favorites Rory McIlroy (+2), Matt Fitzpatrick (+2) and Xander Schauffele (+1) will all be grinding for another jaw at the 5:09 am start time.
In recent waves, Bryson DeChambeau (-3), Scottie Scheffler (-2) and Tyrrell Hatton (-1) will see how they handle a potentially tough afternoon at Royal Birkdale at 10:04am, after all three entered the race for the red-figure lap on Thursday morning. Tommy Fleetwood (-1), Jon Rahm (-1) and Jordan Spieth (+3) will tee off in the next round at 10:15 with Fleetwood hoping to ride the home crowd up the leaderboard for the weekend.
