Disgraced former Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., paid one of his attorneys more than $360,000 combined with his congressional and gubernatorial campaign accounts just weeks after dropping out of the gubernatorial race and resigning from Congress, a Fox News Digital review has found.

A $50K payment, made on April 24 to celebrity attorney Sara Azari “By Law [and] Accounting Services,” raises questions about what the payment was for and whether Swalwell intended to try to salvage his public image amid sexual assault allegations that marred his gubernatorial campaign and ultimately cost him his congressional seat. The payment came 11 days after he resigned from Congress.

Three other payments appear to have been made by Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign the following month to Azari, including a $250,000 payment in early May for “campaign compliance,” according to California state records.

After weeks of allegations circulating on social media, bombshell reporting from CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle forced Democrats to confront the allegations of several women, who gave detailed accounts of how Swalwell chased after drunken women, pressured staff into intimate situations and requested candid photos from female contacts.

These accusations soon backfired.

Then, as top Democrats backed Swalwell, Azari, who runs a law firm with locations in Los Angeles and New York, was one of the few voices to defend Swalwell after his resignation.

“The fact that, you know, after a day, after years, or whatever happened, maybe you were ashamed of what you did, or maybe you were in love and you shouldn’t have done what you did, doesn’t make it rape,” said Azari in an interview with NewsNation.

What is noteworthy is that Swalwell apologized for the “mistakes” he made in his resignation announcement, although he denied the allegations.

“I am deeply sorry to my family, employees, and voters for the mistakes I have made in the past. I will fight the serious, false allegations against me. However, I must answer myself and the ownership for the mistakes I made,” said Swalwell in a statement.

Azari said he admires Swalwell for dealing with the allegations and removing himself from Congress — and the governor’s race.

“I think it shows great accountability, not because he did these things and is stepping down, but because how could he properly defend himself and represent his district as these serious allegations are pending,” he added.

Swalwell faces criminal investigations in New York and Los Angeles in addition to a Justice Department investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct.
