US Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Tuesday that its office in Harlingen, Texas, working with law enforcement partners, arrested 238 illegal immigrants in a one-day operation that the agency said set a record for targeted arrests in the Rio Grande Valley.

The June 18 operation led to the arrest of illegal immigrants on charges including attempted kidnapping, possession of drugs and sex, according to the organization.

“ICE’s mission continues to focus on improving public safety and restoring integrity to our nation’s immigration system,” ICE Harlingen Field Office Director Juan Agudelo said in a statement.
“We will stop at nothing to keep our American communities safe by removing one illegal criminal at a time,” he added.
The arrests come as the Trump administration continues its crackdown on illegal immigration and seeks to remove illegal immigrants from communities across the country.

Among those arrested was Manuel Morales-Geronimo, a native of Mexico who authorities identified as a member of the Paisas gang.
Morales-Geronimo previously had convictions for assault causing bodily harm, drug possession, possession of marijuana, driving under the influence, illegal entry into the United States and three counts of re-entry, according to ICE.
Jose Alfredo Castillo-Mendoza, also of Mexican descent, was arrested during the operation. According to ICE, he has previous convictions for attempted kidnapping, sexual battery and illegal re-entry.

The announcement came the same day President Donald Trump backed away from DHS’s reported move to end more traffic stops at ICE, calling it “one of ICE’s most important and effective crime-fighting tools.”
The reported suspension follows an investigation into recent incidents including a traffic stop.
In a social media post, Trump wrote, “We will not give up one of ICE’s most important and effective crime-fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!”
