Thomas Tuchel: England coach vows to stay on until Euro 2028 despite losing to Argentina in World Cup semi-finals | Football News

Thomas Tuchel says he will continue to lead England in Euro 2028 even though they lost to Argentina in the semi-finals of the World Cup.
England were denied their first World Cup final since 1966 as Argentina came from behind to beat Tuchel’s side in Atlanta.
Anthony Gordon put England in dreamland before Argentina took over, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez breaking English hearts late on.
Tuchel, who was appointed as head coach in January 2025, signed his first contract earlier this year until Euro 2028. The tournament will be hosted by England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.
When asked a specific question about whether he will continue after the World Cup, Tuchel said: “We continue with the contract until the domestic Euros.
“I’m looking forward to that even though at the moment it’s hard to look forward.”
England will remain in the US as they prepare for the third place qualifier against France in Miami on Saturday. Tuchel added that while it was a game they would have liked to have been a part of, reaching their second semi-final in eight years was an achievement for England.
“We will have to wait four years (to go to another World Cup). It is a success, of course the semi-final match. Many soccer countries are eliminated before the semi-finals. It is a success, no one wants to hear that at the moment, me too, because we want more from ourselves because we are very competitive. The situation is to look at the next game.
“None of our players or any French players want to play in this game. They want to play in the finals; we gave everything to be in the finals. Everyone is playing to win the World Cup, but that’s how it is. We have a day before France to recover but we will do it professionally.
“Our thing is to go back and react. That’s what you have to do at the highest level of the sport and we will do it.”
Kane: Holding on was not enough against Argentina
England captain Harry Kane admitted trying to hang on to a 1-0 first-leg lead came back as their World Cup hopes were dashed by Argentina’s recent game.
“I’m worried,” Kane said. “When we were leading 1-0 it seemed that we were trying to hold on to this which is not enough at this level, so we were disappointed.
“We’ve worked so hard to be here. The guys have put in all the running, the sweat, the blood, the tears, whatever it is, so to lose like today just blows up.”
Kane said that the message from Tuchel and his staff was to continue following Gordon’s goal, but it seemed that England were falling further and further behind, which invited pressure which Argentina turned around and took advantage of.
“We struggled to get pressure on the ball (after the goal),” he said. “I thought especially in the first half and the beginning of the second half we pressed them well, we put them under pressure, especially at the top of the pitch, which allowed us to win the ball and control the game a little bit.
“After the goal, even if they were putting more men forward or we couldn’t match man to man, the wave would explode. The boys were making blocks but in the end it wasn’t enough.
“The boys were always ready for any moment in the game. When we were leading, the message was that we should get another goal. When they scored their two goals, it was to try to find something, but we didn’t get the momentum to get back into the game.”
Kane added: “We’ve had a lot of good moments in this tournament. We’ve had a lot of good games, one semi-final. We’re talking about knocking on the door. We’re close. We just need to find that missing piece.
“These tournaments take it out of you. There’s a lot of effort, pressure, mentality. We’ve shown a lot of that in the last six weeks, seven weeks together. We’re just missing that last piece.”
