SEN RICK SCOTT: Enough excuses. The Senate must serve until the job is done

NEWNow you can listen to Fox News articles!

Did you know that the US Senate has only been in session for 79 days (about 40% of the time) so far this year? And so far, we haven’t passed anything to protect our elections, reduce inflation, reduce spending, or prevent another Democratic shutdown.

Well, what’s not shocking is the fact that nothing has been done while we only work 2.5 days a week. It’s crazy. At the minimum rate we get things done, we have to work for 7 days.

Let’s take a status update: The Senate has not delivered on several of our most important promises to the American people this year, including protecting our elections with the SAVE America Act.

TRUMP HOLDS WASHINGTON REPRESENTATIVE HOSTAGE TO SAVE LAW AS CENTRAL WATCHES AND MIDWIVES IN GOP CONTROL

As I noted in a recent letter I wrote to my colleagues in the Senate. Republicans, Democrats, and Independents increasingly want voter ID at the polls and only Americans will be able to register to vote, key components of the SAVE America Act.

However, the Senate has yet to pass it – or even agree on how to proceed with it. To fix this, we need to change the way we do business.

The senator’s job was to come to Washington to debate, vote, and accomplish all of our agenda items before we allowed ourselves to go home.

Sadly, that is no longer the case. In recent decades, under the leadership of both Democrats and Republicans, the Senate has acted slowly, and the American people are feeling the consequences of the legislature’s lack of urgency.

Currently, we are taking less than 10 votes per week. We arrive on Monday night to vote and leave quickly on Thursday afternoon. The Senate rarely works on Fridays and almost never on the weekend – even when there are looming deadlines on issues critical to the safety, security, and stability of the American people.

And it’s not just election security that’s at stake. We still need to fund the government to prevent another open border Democrat shutdown. We need to cut spending in order to reduce interest rates and inflation that are wreaking havoc on America’s budget.

America is the greatest country in the world. We have a very strong economy because of the workers who work hard every day to do their jobs, support their families, and achieve the American dream.

I think the Senate should show the kind of behavior we rely on from the American people to keep our economy running. We have many policies to put in place before election day this November. If we still have work to do, then why are we only showing 2.5 days a week?

Our situation is not the failure of any group or individual, it is a problem that has been getting worse for decades. Congress decreases productivity every year because we go home on Thursday and it still needs to be done.

I’m sure we’d all like to be at home with our families as much as possible — every American probably feels that way — but that’s not the job we all asked our voters to elect us to do. It’s certainly not a job I promised the people of Florida. I told them I would work as hard as I could to help them achieve the American Dream, stay safe, and live free.

Time is short. Doing all this before November will mean staying in Washington until we figure out how to deliver it. It can mean sitting down and working together to find solutions, instead of throwing up our hands and going home.

We can’t take “no” for an answer, and we can’t give up just because it’s hard.

To that end, I will be going directly to the Senate floor in the coming weeks to outline the policies I used when I asked Floridians to vote for me.

Let’s fix the problem. Let’s stop flying home on Thursday after lunch, start voting more, and keep our promises. That’s what the American people deserve.
