Malik Wrightsell is accused of shooting 2 Chicago police officers on July 4

Two Chicago police officers were shot while struggling with an armed suspect over the Fourth of July weekend as separate shootings left three people dead and at least 16 injured, according to police figures.

The Chicago Police Department said Malik Wrightsell, 34, has been charged with attempted murder, battery on a police officer, aggravated assault on a police officer, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm by a repeat offender and multiple other shooting charges.

Officers were conducting a traffic stop in the South Chicago neighborhood just before 5:00 p.m. Friday when Wrightsell fled on foot, police said. Police chased him to the 7900 block of South Chappel Avenue, where he allegedly resisted arrest.

During the struggle, police say Wrightsell pulled out a gun and fired, hitting one officer in the stomach. The officer’s ballistic vest stopped the bullet before it fired and hit Wrightsell.

A second officer was also shot in the arm during the altercation, and that officer’s ballistic vest also stopped the bullet. Responding officers rendered aid to both officers and Wrightsell before all three were taken to local hospitals. Police also found a gun at the scene.

Both officers were listed in good condition. Wrightsell was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

The shooting was one of 11 shootings recorded across Chicago between 6:00 Friday and 11:59 pm Sunday, preliminary figures from the Chicago Police Department provided the Fox News Digital show. These incidents left 16 people shot and three dead.

Citing the Chicago police, FOX 32 Chicago reported that six people between the ages of 17 and 20 were injured in a shooting that took place on the West Side of the city early Sunday morning.

About 10 minutes earlier, a 17-year-old girl was critically injured in a nearby shooting. The station also reported that a 33-year-old man was shot and killed on the West Side, while a 31-year-old man was seriously injured after being found shot in a house on Sunday afternoon.

Multiple shootings and stabbings were reported across the city over the holiday weekend.

Preliminary figures showed a sharp drop from the Fourth of July holiday weekend in 2025, when Chicago recorded 32 shootings involving 44 victims, including nine deaths, FOX 32 Chicago reported.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting.
