Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said in Sunday’s “State of the Union” debate that Democrats must face a leadership dispute after New York Democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat, DN.Y., in her party’s primary.
“I think what our party will face will be very good and something we have not done since the 1992 election is to fight for what we believe in,” said Shapiro. “Having a fight about ideas that we’re going to hold on to and campaign for and deliver as a way to make people’s lives better.”
Shapiro was asked by CNN’s Dana Bash what message he took from Democratic voters in New York choosing three candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whom Bash described as “far left and Democratic socialist candidates.”

“Those were races in individual states in one state,” Shapiro said. “I think you’re seeing very different congressional races and Democratic candidates here in Pennsylvania.”
The Pennsylvania Democrat said the candidates who are building activist enthusiasm will now have to show they can govern.
“I think the important thing is that the people who are making noise, who are doing this high-level politics, need to look at how they are going to get results,” said Shapiro.

Shapiro said the campaign rhetoric is not enough for voters facing economic pressures, health problems and the cost of living.
“It’s one thing to talk about ideas during the campaign,” Shapiro said. “It’s another thing to bring people who are truly injured.”
When asked directly about Chevalier, Shapiro said that the voters in his district chose themselves but made it clear that they have little in common with his politics.

“His district voted for him, but I have a lot of differences with that person,” Shapiro said. “And he’s not someone who seems like I can agree with him on a lot of things or that we have the same values.”
Chevalier defeated Espaillat, DN.Y., after the Associated Press declared him the winner of the Democratic primary. With more than the expected 86% of votes counted, Chevalier had 49.4% of the vote to Espaillat’s 45.9%, according to NY1.
The district includes parts of Upper Manhattan, including Harlem, and parts of the Bronx. Chevalier, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, was one of Mamdani’s endorsed congressional candidates.
Chevalier told supporters after his primary win that the result marks a turning point in the region’s politics.

“I know that each of us sees what I see right now: a new dawn for this region,” said Avila Chevalier, according to NY1.
His campaign website lists priorities including “Stop ICE,” “Children, Not Bombs,” “Medicare-for-all,” “Housing for All,” “Quality Education” and “Fighting Corporate Greed.”
Avila Chevalier dismissed the criticism for the things he wrote on social media, saying that the focus should be on the future of the region.
“My opponent wants to live in the past,” Avila Chevalier told CNN, according to the National News Desk. “I’ve grown a lot over the years since these tweets, and I’m focused on our community and the future of our community.”

Shapiro also said that Democrats should focus on candidates who can turn campaign promises into results.
“I think that as a party, we need to find a path towards candidates who will be able to deliver to the people and make their lives better,” said Shapiro.
