Mary Earps joins London City Lionesses: Former England goalkeeper returns to WSL after PSG exit | Football news

London City Lionesses have announced the signing of former England goalkeeper Mary Earps.

The 33-year-old will officially join on a two-year deal on July 1 when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires.

Earps returns to the WSL two years after leaving Manchester United. Across his five seasons at United, he made 102 appearances and kept 45 clean sheets.

She retired from international duty last summer in a shock announcement just five weeks out from the Euros after losing her starting goalkeeper spot to Hannah Hampton.

Earps played a key role in England’s Euro 2022 success and route to the World Cup finals a year later.

“I’m excited to join this club and I’m looking forward to it,” Earps said.

“I feel like the club matches what I stand for. I can’t wait to get down to business.”

London City appear to be keen on making a number of statement signings this summer, and have great interest in Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas.

Earps: I have a lot to offer – that’s why I chose London City

Speaking in a statement confirming his arrival, Earps explained his reason for joining London City, who were promoted to the WSL for the first time last season after finishing sixth.

Earps continued: “The values of the team represent what I want to stand for and they are passionate about what I want to achieve and change the game in a positive way. All the discussions have been really positive and every time I talk to the team I want to hear more.

“The vision and ambition, including the new training facility, is fantastic and I’m looking forward to seeing that develop. It shows what our owner, Michele (Kang), and everyone at the club wants to do in terms of really going for it.

“It’s about setting the mark and saying we want to compete in the short term.

“I’m looking forward to working with Elene (Lete) and the goalkeeping unit. Elene did a great job and stepped up last season. I hope we can push each other and work hard and have fun.

“My message to the fans is that I’m really excited to start making memories together. I can’t wait to play in front of you all.

“I am looking forward to getting to know the players, the way of playing and the culture of the club, and trying to give everything I can to help the club achieve its goals and be as successful as possible.

“I feel like I still have a lot to give the game, that’s why I chose London City.

“It won’t be easy, the WSL is extremely competitive. The club had a fantastic 2025/26 season, finishing mid-table in their first season, now it’s about climbing the table and working to finish as high as possible.”

Big names continue to rise in London City…

Sky Sports’ Laura Hunter:

Another coup for the City of London. The big name signings continue to rise – and it won’t stop at Mary Earps either. Ambition extends to trying to land former Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas on a free transfer this summer. That would truly be a GOAT signing.

It’s a star-studded cast for a team that has only spent one season in England’s top flight, backed by the wealth of free agent owner Michele Kang.

One may ask how all these stars will move under one roof. There are plenty of modern-day examples of that formula, though it’s most obvious in the men’s game. I think Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe at PSG – the vibe was completely gone.

However, there is no doubt that Earps is a great signing for London City and he is improving them a lot.

Eder Maestre’s team scored 35 goals last season, more than the league average (32). They have to deal with that if it is a plan to try to dismantle the top four teams in this division.
