Social media is on the wrong side of history when it comes to the ‘Seinfeld,’ ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ debate

Most fans would agree that “Seinfeld” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” are two of the greatest television shows to ever grace the universe, and they share many similarities.

For one, they come from the same twisted brain of Larry David, and both feature stories that focus on the minutiae and banalities of everyday life; “shows nothing,” as it were.

But, last week, one man sparked an internet debate about which of the two games is better, and a lot of people were siding with the wrong choice.

A YouTube content creator and history teacher named Mr. Beat (not to be confused with Mr. Beast) took to X late last week, performing a nine-word script that has been the talk of the internet for days.

The post got nearly 16 million views (not bad for a guy just south of 80,000 followers) and got some decent responses, many of which were in line with Beat.

If I may be so bold, I think Mr. Beat is dead wrong.

To say that “Curb” is “superior” to “Seinfeld” is way off base, and I would argue that it’s “somewhat inferior.”

“Seinfeld,” in my opinion, is the better show of the two for different reasons.

Before I begin, I want to say that I have no problem with “The Road.” I think it’s funny and a great watch. One of the best comics ever.

But “Seinfeld” is the pinnacle of sitcoms, and all the rest are summaries.

Perhaps this is the truth Mr. Beat is forgotten, but there would be no “Street” without “Seinfeld.”

The NBC sitcom paved the way for others, including the semibiographical vehicle Larry David, and almost every show like it can be found on “Seinfeld.”

Hell, an entire season of “Curb” is dedicated to Larry putting together a “Seinfeld” reunion, so the show even pays homage to its spiritual ancestor.

We also have to deal with the fact that “Seinfeld” had to deal with the constraints of network television and didn’t have the luxury of airing on HBO.

If the argument is that “Seinfeld” is too light from a comedy point of view, it is because there was no telling the story.

Episodes like “The Competition” had to deal with a serious topic in a more contrived and insuendo-filled way.

The fact that the show is still very funny, even with the most processed material, is a testament to the greatness of “Seinfeld”.

And I firmly believe that “Seinfeld” had more memorable characters than “Curb.”

Sure, everyone remembers Jerry, George, Kramer, and Elaine, but even side characters like Newman, Frank Costanza, and Jackie Chiles are more memorable than most of the main characters on “Curb.”

You even have guys like the Soup Nazi, a character who appeared in one episode of “Seinfeld,” and is still talked about nearly three decades later.

Finally, and it might be a minor nitpick, but “Seinfeld” came out on top.

After nine seasons, Jerry called it quits, and it was a good time to leave the rest of the stage.

“Curb,” on the other hand, was renewed twice and ended in 2024, and while some of the elements from the later seasons are still fresh and funny, the show should have and could have ended after its eighth season.

The series finale of “Curb” even mirrors the finale of “Seinfeld,” as if you needed any more proof of which of the two shows was who the alpha dog was.

Ultimately, you are free in your opinion. But to say that “Curb” is superior to “Seinfeld,” as if it’s a straight truth is wrong.

You’re more than welcome to find “Curb” funny, but I’ll always hold “Seinfeld” in its own category in terms of being the best sitcom of all time.

Sadly, once again, the internet is on the wrong side of history.
