Trump lifts Iran sanctions after peace deal: ‘Let the oil flow’ – National

A peace agreement has been reached between the United States and Iran, according to US President Donald Trump and the prime minister of Pakistan.
Trump made the announcement Sunday afternoon on his social media platform Truth Social.
“I hereby fully authorize the free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, at the same time, I authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade,” Trump wrote. “Ships of the Earth, start your engines. Stop the oil flow!”
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif added that the deal would include Lebanon.
“Both sides immediately and permanently cut off military operations on all sides, including Lebanon,” Sharif said.
The signing of the new agreement will take place on Friday in Switzerland.
Sunday’s announcement follows a day in which Israel, excluded from the talks, attacked areas south of Beirut.

Sharif said in his place the mediators will hold a series of meetings this week.
“These pre-implementation talks will lay the groundwork for technical discussions and an official signing ceremony,” Sharif wrote, adding that there will be an official signing ceremony on Friday in Switzerland.
Iran wanted a ceasefire to include an end to the war in Lebanon, where Israel has pushed its offensive deeper than at any time in the past quarter-century as it targets Hezbollah. Tehran also said it wants the release of billions of dollars in frozen funds.
Tehran’s missile program and support for armed proxies in the region, such as Hezbollah, were among the issues the US and Israel said when they launched the war on February 28. The conflict began with strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Khamenei’s son became Iran’s new supreme leader, although he has not been seen in public since the war began. His consent was required for Iran to sign the peace agreement.
Trump has faced criticism for the deal before it was announced, with members of his own Republican Party among them. Some politicians said the proposed deal did not improve on the terms of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal signed under former president Barack Obama, which Trump withdrew during his first term.
The Iranian government also warned in the hours before the deal was announced that any split at home over the deal would weaken its negotiating position.
On Sunday morning, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called for national unity and called it a “disgrace” when someone stood in front of parliament and called anyone who debated a traitor.
