A new Gallup poll reveals that Americans’ support for LGBTQ+ issues has peaked and has begun to backslide, with fewer Americans favoring same-sex marriage or viewing same-sex relationships as morally acceptable.

The poll, released Wednesday, finds that while a majority of Americans (65%) still support legal same-sex marriage, that figure has dropped six percentage points from its peak in 2022 and 2023. Meanwhile, approval of same-sex relationships fell to 62%, which Gallup said was its lowest point since 2016.

Public acceptance of transgenderism has experienced a dramatic decline over the past five years. Today, only 38% of Americans believe transgenderism is acceptable, down eight points from 2021, while a majority of 57% consider it morally wrong.

The cultural shift is driven largely by Republicans and, to a lesser extent, independents, while Democrats’ views on LGBTQ issues remain strong, Gallup said.

The group’s shift is clearly visible in attitudes toward same-sex marriage. Among Republicans, support for legal same-sex marriage fell to 37%, down from the 55% majority recorded in 2021-2022.

Independents also saw a six-point drop to 67%, while Democrats held on to 87% since 2022.

A similar pattern emerged in views on the behavior of same-sex relationships. For Republicans, approval fell 21 points to 35%, the lowest since 2005-2014. Independents fell eight points, down to 64% while there was no significant change for Democrats, at 81%.

Another big difference can be seen in the matter of gender change. Just 5 percent of Republicans view transgenderism as morally acceptable, compared to 42 percent of independents and 60 percent of Democrats. Gallup noted that Republican support on the issue has declined slightly since 2021, but the attitudes of independents and Democrats have held up until a sudden drop in support this year.

Similarly, approval of same-sex and same-sex relationships rose from 40% in 2001 to 71% in 2022, before a sharp drop to 64% in 2023, when it has increased significantly.

Gallup has documented a decline in support for LGBTQ issues in recent years due to strong pressure against diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs aimed at promoting the acceptance of LGBTQ+ people and other historically marginalized groups.
