De La Cruz and Lujan are competing in a newly redrawn district, currently numerically represented by a member of the “Squad” Rep. Gregorio Casar of the Austin area.

Casar, however, chose to run for a nearby district that covers half of his district after that office holder, fellow Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett, who chose not to run for re-election contingent on the success of the new Texas map.

The new district extends south to San Antonio and is considered more Trump-friendly than the previous election.

Lujan initially won the March primary 33%-27% over De La Cruz, who finished second and advanced to Tuesday’s contest.

De La Cruz was sent to the Middle East and Mexico border, and has the approval of both her sister and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La.
