“Why Is Anthony Volpe Getting 1000 Chances Now?” – Yankees Fans React After Spencer Jones Is Optioned To Triple-A

The New York Yankees made an important roster move before Friday’s home opener against the Tampa Rays by demoting rookie shortstop Spencer Jones to the minor leagues, protecting righty slugger Anthony Volpe, and finally restoring infielder Jose Caballero to the injured list.
Since being called up on May 8, Jones has posted a .167 batting average (4 hits in 24 at-bats) with two RBIs and a .426 OPS across 10 games, striking out 12 times in 27 plate appearances.

The Bronx Bombers had the option of sending down right-handed batters, shortstop Volpe, or utility player Max Schuemann. Still, they chose to demote Jones, a left-handed hitter, considering upcoming matchups.
Fans were quick to react to Jones’ assignment to triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with many criticizing the move for not giving the talented 25-year-old rookie enough opportunities in the big leagues.
“He was BETTER than Volpe. He eliminates mistakes. WTF?? Why does volpe get 1000 chances yet?” commented another fan.
“I don’t agree with this at all. He’s going to demote Jones, keep Volpe short, and send Cabby to the outfield when Trent is hurt. I’d like to see Jones play every day. He really struggled, but his at-bats weren’t bad. He hit a lot of hard balls, right at people… The hits were high, but everybody’s commenting on this team,” said a fan.

“I don’t care what anyone says, he shouldn’t have been demoted. First you get him to face a great team and sit him down for like 3-4 games and deprive him of scoring in the games he plays. The Yankees don’t want to raise prospects,” however one fan commented.
Some fans expressed a more optimistic view, suggesting the move could help Jones. They believe he will now be motivated to work harder and look for more at-bats in the minors to get back to the big leagues.
“OK makes him very hungry, he hasn’t been able to hit minor league hitters regularly, I know this will happen. This will make him hungry to work hard to improve his craft! We know he can hit HR, he can drive key. It doesn’t have to be HR every time. Just hit,” said one fan.
“Tough move, but I hope he comes back strong in Triple A,” commented one fan.

“24 at-bats…very small sample when Yankee bats are lying all over the place. Better than expected runner and great athlete. Good setup for next time. Pump the brakes doomer,” one fan commented.
Yankees Manager Aaron Boone Called Decision on Spencer Jones Difficult
Speaking to the media at Yankee Stadium on Friday, manager Aaron Boone admitted that deciding on Jones was a tough decision. “It was a really tough call,” Boone said, noting that several meetings took place between the players before and after the Blue Jays’ series finale.
“We have had discussions before [Thursday’s] game, he had more after the game, then he took time to even make a decision. It’s just a matter of who we’re playing, who we’re facing [in] next game week, [we] I felt like this was the right way,” said Boone.

Jones returns to Triple-A, where he previously hit 11 home runs with a .958 OPS in 33 games before being promoted. Last season, he hit 35 home runs, posted a .933 OPS, and stole 29 bases over 116 games in Double-A and Triple-A, primarily as a center fielder. Back on the field, the Yankees lost the series opener to the Rays, 4-2, on Friday night.
