Michael Carrick has agreed a two-year contract to continue as Manchester United’s head coach.

The deal also contains an option year which would mean he is in charge at Old Trafford until at least 2029.

The final legal details are now being sorted out and the club hope to make an announcement within the next 24 to 48 hours.

United host Nottingham Forest on Sunday, live Sky Sportsin their last home game of the season, where the head coach usually gives a full speech to the supporters.

Jason Wilcox, the director of football, and Omar Berrada, the chief executive, believe Carrick is the right man to continue leading United after an impressive 15-game spell in which they secured the Champions League and secured wins over Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

The United midfielder has been at the forefront of this role for a long time now, his managers impressed by his popularity in the playing team, his handling of the media, his understanding of the origins and size of the football club – but also, most importantly, the results he has achieved on the pitch.

Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports News has revealed Manchester United’s change in recruitment at the club

In his 15 games in charge, Carrick won ten and drew three, guaranteeing Champions League football next season and the resulting £100m in revenue.

Carrick delivered everything that was asked of him and more, and in those circumstances it was always difficult to see how United could give the job to another player.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Carrick dismissed speculation that his long-term future at Old Trafford will soon end.

“My future will be decided very soon,” Carrick told the media.

“We knew that was going to be the end of the season, if not the end of the season, so nothing has changed. There’s no big swing to that. Obviously anything beyond that is very close to it.”

Michael Carrick says he will address the fans in the final home game

“I think the speech is important, regardless of the situation,” he said of the tradition of United head coaches addressing fans after the final home game of the season.

“It’s important because of the fans and we thank them, and I really thank them for the season and the support, and certainly for the last four months.

“Nevertheless [my future]about what we’ve been through together so far, and that connection, and I felt like the players felt that. It’s important.”

‘Man Utd management says Carrick is a good man’

Dan Khan’s Sky Sports News at Carrington:

“You have to look at what Carrick has done in 15 games in charge. Ten wins, including amazing victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, but he has also revived a lot in this team. Kobbie Mainoo, for example, was named young player of the year on Thursday.

“I know Carrick is completely bought into the squad. I think we’ve seen that throughout his time in charge, when they’ve had a few dips – like the loss to Leeds last month.

“Then they came back to win that game at Stamford Bridge, which I think was a huge point.”

Highlights of the Premier League match between Manchester United and Liverpool

Gary Neville on Carrick’s future after the 3-2 win over Liverpool:

“There are things that have emerged that will give Manchester United fans the comfort that they are in safe hands.

“Manchester United need stability. They haven’t had that in the last few years but he will bring that in a way that everyone trusts him.

“The fans love him, the players obviously love him. The owners will trust him. Next year, you have 55-60 games with the Champions League and they won’t get out of the first round of the cup competitions. Then it’s all a different level of management and scrutiny. It’s a very big challenge. Do you have the experience? Do you have the body to trust the job?

“Some people say: ‘Why don’t you give him a one-year contract and give him another year so he can continue to settle?’ I don’t think I can argue with that.

“But if there is a world-class manager who has won titles, Manchester United must follow that path because five managers have never had the experience of a big club. Michael would be one who has not had that.”

A number of Manchester United players have come out in support of Carrick being given a permanent job.

Mad Diallo he said earlier this month that everyone in the dressing room would be happy to see Carrick stay on as head coach next season.

Amad Diallo said the players want Carrick to continue with Manchester United

“He is that manager who has a good relationship with all the players so we are very happy to have him as manager, and we will be happy if we have him next season as manager.”

The Ivory Coast player added: “Even if you are in difficult times, he is there to talk to you, he is there to help you.

“The biggest change is probably because the team is stronger. Like in the dressing room, we’re really together.

“Every mistake is not a problem, your mistake is my mistake, so we are a team that doesn’t care if you make a mistake and leave again, so we move forward, we want to win as a team.

“That’s something that’s changed the club, and I think it’s because of Michael Carrick and his staff – don’t forget Trav. [coach Travis Binnion] and other workers.

Talks between Carrick and Man Utd have progressed in recent days

Rob Dorsett for Sky Sports News:

Michael Carrick has been at the forefront of this work for a long time.

He has impressed with the work he has done but more importantly, it is the results on the pitch that have convinced the Old Trafford management to open talks.

He has done everything that has been asked of him and more in his short time at the helm of United. But I don’t think Carrick got the job he was given, he got the right for the job he did.

Manchester United have spoken to representatives of other candidates and I expect those names to be the same Thomas Tuchel, Carlo Ancelotti, Julian Nagelsmann again Luis Enriquebut those who are to be baptized have somehow fallen away.

Tuchel signed a new deal with England, Ancelotti the same with Brazil and we expect Luis Enrique to stay at PSG, so United’s options were dwindling when Carrick put his hand to the job and showed he was the right man for the job.

Dale: How can you not give Carrick? The players are all behind the manager. Bringing someone in can disrupt the dressing room.

StefanL: A big mistake. Apart from the first two games, the football was very bad. It will contribute to being in the bottom half at Christmas.

Sam D: Good decision. Utd need to continue to build on what Carrick has done and replacing him could spoil that. He took her back to the summer window.

Ryan: Carrick has done very well but there is no reason for him to get the job when there are better people out there. Sunderland’s performance should have raised alarm bells. And in the middle of January we will be looking for another temporary manager because he will be fired.

Keith p: I love Carrick. He has made us all proud but is he really ready for the Champions League? Why not make it all about Luis Enrique?

Ant: It may not be a happy choice but it is the right one. Experts must think that Utd will finish in eighth place this season. Rounding out the top four, Carrick did an impressive job.

Josh Opray: His bosses are like Fergie. The whole dressing room loves him and will play for him no matter what. That is a huge factor in football that cannot be ignored. Why not give him a chance!

Bob L: I hope it’s not a repeat of what happened to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. One good season as a caretaker manager, then a difficult season as a permanent manager, and he ends up being fired.
