What you need to know about Robusta

Storied Calumet Farm, best known for producing Triple Crown winners Whirlaway and Citation, holds the record for most wins in the Preakness Stakes by an owner with eight. This farm is associated with a nearly identical race of Black-Eyed Susans.

And perhaps Calumet’s relationship with the Preakness is the main reason why the farm’s Robusta is in the race. Certainly past performances and current form suggest he would be better off going elsewhere. In his last two starts, Robusta finished last of seven in the Santa Anita Derby (lost by 16 lengths) and 14 of 17 in the Kentucky Derby (17 ½ lengths). In the end, he was wide all around, did not fire and only passed the tired horses on the ground.

Nothing about the last two races points to a competitive effort after two weeks in Louisville. O’Neill must hope that Robusta will return to form in the San Felipe Stakes in March when he nearly went off the upset at 67-1, losing only by a head, and earned an 89 Beyer Speed Figure, 11 points better than his next best. But based on the horse’s five other performances, San Felipe looks like an anomaly.

In five starts prior to the Kentucky Derby, Robusta had not gone further than the lead at the third turn. So expect him to push the pace, especially from post position No. 4. His one win came in the only race in which he was given an easy lead of :48 seconds, and that’s unlikely to happen Saturday in a speed-packed Preakess field.
