Spurs 1 – 1 Leeds

Tottenham are two points off the relegation zone with two games to play after being held back by Leeds with a 1-1 draw.

Mathys Tel went from hero to zero after scoring a sumptuous opener before giving away a penalty for a dangerous high kick that caught Ethan Ampadu in the area – the kick call awarded after a VAR review.

The draw will help West Ham, which means if they beat Newcastle on Sunday, live Sky Sportsthey will go above Spurs in the table.

Tottenham’s next game is against Chelsea on Tuesday May 19, live Sky Sports.

Sean Longstaff almost scored for Leeds 13 minutes into added time but was denied the first goal of the season by Antonin Kinsky, who pushed an effort over the crossbar.

With Roberto De Zerbi, who was looking for back-to-back wins, constantly issuing instructions from the touchline, Spurs came to life midway through the first half, when Tel managed to squeeze past two defenders before his shot was deflected high and Palhinha followed suit moments later from close range.

Spurs built on that momentum after the break and a moment of magic from Tel gave the breakthrough in the 50th minute.

Porro’s corner was cleared to Tel, who got a touch and fired a fine finish into the top corner for his fourth goal of the campaign.

Leeds then received a spot-kick gift from Tottenham’s goalkeeper Tel.

De Zerbi turned to his bench and introduced Maddison with five minutes left, but in stoppage time on 13 minutes, Kinsky thwarted Longstaff before Maddison had strong appeals for the penalty and was sent off after meeting with Nmecha to ensure the spoils were shared.

De Zerbi: I hope Leeds will play like West Ham

Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi speaking to Sky Sports:

“We played a good game, not great but there was a lot of pressure. We didn’t play calmly.

“We wanted to win quickly. In the end, I think we have to fight until the end of the season. Leeds played a good game.

“We hope they will play like this against West Ham because they are so good.

“I’m sorry for the penalty we got because Mathys Tel scored a very good goal. He’s still very young and it’s not a problem for me. I’m happy with the attitude and mentality.

“We didn’t play well but fighting relegation is like this, you can’t play every game calmly. We have to improve and change habits, fighting relegation is different from fighting for the Champions League.”

It’s a game about math
