A sub-inspector in Tamil Nadu was caught on CCTV beating up a 65-year-old shopkeeper while searching for banned tobacco products. The policeman hailed from Thanjavur and the incident took place on Mukkuttu Road near Pattukottai, the video of which quickly went viral on social media, sparking outrage.
The Madukkur police received information about the alleged sale of illegal tobacco products such as gut again Hans at a local store. On being tipped off, a police officer, Jeevanandham, was sent to the scene to investigate.
On arrival, the inspector questioned Thirunavukarasu, an elderly shopkeeper, about the alleged sale of banned items. When Thirunavukarasu denied the allegations, the policeman was seen on CCTV footage slapping the shopkeeper. The video also shows the owner of the shop falling at the feet of the policeman and asking for help.
After the video went viral, Jeevanandham was transferred to the Armed Reserve. An internal inquiry has been launched to further investigate the actions of the sub-inspector.
Reports indicate that in the last 10 months, the Tamil Nadu Police have seized more than 208 tonnes of gutka and registered more than 21,000 cases as part of their drive to crack down on banned products.
