On Jan 8, 2011, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head in Tucson, Arizona. Among the tools first responders reached for was the ‘Emergency Bandage,’ a pressure dressing so close to the Israeli military that the American military named it the “Israeli bandage.” It saved his life.

The deep friendship between America and Israel has saved, and continues to save, American lives. Israel is a friend and a friend in the deepest sense of the word.

AMERICA AND ISRAEL: A DEAL, NOT A TREATY

The Commander of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), Admiral Brad Cooper, recently visited Israel as the official guest of the Chief of General Staff, LTG Eyal Zamir. The CENTCOM commander and the Joint Chiefs of Staff first held an extended meeting each. This was followed by a meeting attended by other commanders. The IDF says the meeting serves as another indicator of the relationship between the commanders and is an additional step to develop closer relations between the IDF and the US military and to strengthen defense cooperation between the two countries. The US House of Representatives is about to vote on security assistance to Israel, including an amendment by Rep. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., to strip that aid entirely. Policy disagreements can exist, even between countries that are closely related. But these must not come at the cost of American lives and regional stability. ”

Anti-Israel representative Massie found himself on the wrong end of the presidency after Trump endorsed his rival in his latest GOP run. The result: Ed Gallrein defeated incumbent Massie as his constituents turned to his unpopular positions.

Israel’s opponents have long framed America’s support for charity, as one way of contributing to a clientelistic nation. In doing so, they ignore the relationship for what it really is: a mutual security and technology relationship, built on shared values, that has paid off for the United States many times over.

The current conflict with Iran reflects this unique relationship. In 1979, the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, began calling the United States “the Great Satan” – one day after the regime seized the American embassy in Tehran, launching a 444-day crisis. Later that year, Khomeini referred to Israel as “Little Satan,” a target group that cast Israel as an American army. Israel is a beacon of Western values in a dark place, and it is that light that the regime is determined to extinguish. In the decades since then the blood of America, Israel, and the West has been shed by the Islamic Republic and its proxies – Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis.

Two facts follow. First, believe your enemies when they tell you who they are: when they sing “Death to America,” they mean it. Second, what begins with the Jews does not end with the Jews. The terror of Hamas against Israel in the 1990s spread to New York on 9/11 and beyond. America’s enemies are Israel’s enemies, and both are fighting for the benefit of civilization as a whole.

Israel is also not a passive recipient of technology, but a major exporter and co-developer – its cyber technology is widely adopted by the US and NATO. Iron Dome, among the most successful missile defense systems in operational history, is a joint US-Israeli project built with American components, alongside David’s Sling and Arrow. Israeli innovations in drones, cybersecurity, and weapons have entered American programs just as American funding has entered Israel.

It doesn’t end there. In 2017, it was reported that top Israeli cyber experts had infiltrated a small cell of militant bomb-makers in Syria. That’s how the US learned that ISIS was working with explosives designed to fool airport X-ray machines by looking like laptop batteries.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump in Israel

In another incident, Iran carried out a high-profile drone attack on the Al-Tanf area near the Iraq-Syria border, which is home to about 200 US troops. The site was taken down soon after, thanks to an early warning from Israeli intelligence. No American casualties were reported. The long and deep Israeli-US intelligence cooperation has saved many innocent lives. From the recent Iranian plot to assassinate President Trump, to that regime’s use of criminal organizations in Australia and Europe to attack Iranian dissidents and other civilian targets, Israel has been systematically positioned to be the eyes and ears of the West in a dangerous, volatile region full of forces hostile to freedom and democracy.

Almost every dollar earned by Israel is spent on American-made weapons, aircraft and systems. Money doesn’t leave the US Treasury as it flows through it, bringing American manufacturers and supporting jobs in all 50 states. Israel Aerospace Industries alone works with more than 800 American suppliers in 44 states. This is not a charity — it’s an alliance that saves lives with shared intelligence, battle-tested defense systems and a military that never calls on the US military to protect it.

That is a partnership between two competent partners, not a social arrangement. It’s the kind of coalition that, on a January morning in Tucson, puts the right bandage on the right hands at the right time. Michael Oren, Israel’s ambassador to Washington at the time, called learning about that fact one of the proudest moments of his time.

Some partnerships are measured in contracts and dollars. Some are measured in one life, they are saved.
