Bethell’s chance at the top | ‘That’s where he wants to hit you’

Speaking of the latest Sky Sports Cricket PodcastDinesh Karthik – who is part of the established coaching staff with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Bethell’s IPL team – backed his attendance in the first game.

“Bethell sincerely wants to be at the top of the innings,” said Karthik. “In white ball cricket you choose to open.

“In ODIs we will see him open and I will not be surprised to see him open in The Hundred. That is where he likes to bat.

“It’s something he’s not used to, it’s something he wants to embrace, so here’s his chance. He’s a great player and I see him having a good time at the top.”

Although England’s 4-0 series win in the T20s took them to the top of the world rankings that way, they currently sit in eighth place in ODIs, below Afghanistan – and above India.

On why England are struggling to replicate their T20 form in 50-over cricket, Karthik said: “I think it’s time to focus and concentrate.

“You’ve got 30 overs of dead time between the 11th and 40th overs where what you’re expected to do is try to change the batting and hit the odd boundary – and I don’t think T20 players sometimes get used to that.

“It can be mentally challenging when you take individual players. In T20 cricket they want to hit a boundary every ball and now, suddenly, they have to go down two or three gears and say ‘no, a boundary is not needed, let me just hit it’.

“Also, starting earlier in the day means that the pitches can liven up and that the players need to deal with the swinging ball – that has been a challenge for many top T20 players.”

Brendon McCullum shares his thoughts after being sacked as head coach of England’s Test team

“I was disappointed at first but at the same time, it’s a business of results,” McCullum said Sky Sports News.

“We didn’t get the results we wanted, and I’m going to wear that. Basically, it was a tap on the shoulder, and you explode.

“I’ve loved my time with the Test team over the last four years – it’s been one of the best times I’ve had in 20 odd years on the cricket circuit.

“I’m disappointed for all the fans that we couldn’t get the results that everyone wanted, and I’m sorry for that.

“But at the same time I’m very excited about the white ball job, and I’m looking forward to taking us to where we want to go, which is to win trophies.”
