Jannik Sinner is starting to make a habit of responding to adversity in Paris with a title at Wimbledon.

The top-ranked Sinner beat Alexander Zverev 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday for his second consecutive title at the All England Club after his German rival appeared to have knee problems following a slip on the grass with a crucial point in the third set.

Sinner’s fifth Grand Slam title came in his first tournament since losing in the second round at the French Open, where he succumbed to the Paris heat.

When Sinner ripped a forehand up the line for his first match point, the Italian fell to the grass on his back in celebration.

“There is no better place to play tennis,” said Sinner during the award ceremony.

Last year, Sinner beat Carlos Alcaraz in the final at the All England Club after wasting three points against his opponent in the final at Roland Garros.

It was Sinner’s 10th straight win over Zverev, who was coming off his first Grand Slam title at the French Open.

Zverev’s previous performance at Wimbledon had reached the fourth round three times.

“I am 29 years old and this is the first time I believe that I can win this trophy,” said Zverev.

Prince William joined his wife Kate and their two children at the star-studded Royal Box finale which included actors Dustin Hoffman, Nicole Kidman and Ben Stiller.

Linda Noskova beat Karolina Muchova in the Czechoslovak women’s final on Saturday for her first Grand Slam title.

Zverev slips

The top two seeds seemed perfectly matched until Zverev got his only break point of the match at 3-3 in the third – two hours and 42 minutes. Sinner produced a drop shot and Zverev went down and appeared to hyper-extend his right knee as he tried to change directions behind the baseline.

Zverev clutched his knee in apparent pain and Sinner went around the net and helped his opponent off the grass. Zverev got off to a quick start but looked flustered and dropped his racket on the first serve in frustration when he missed a forehand and gave Sinner the first break of the match and a 5-3 lead in the third. Soni then served it.

Zverev also lost 14 straight sets to Sinner and when he got the first set of the final with the winner on the line to close out a tight tiebreaker, he let out a loud roar towards his box as he bent over in celebration.

Zverev has been consistently hitting speeds of up to 139 mph (224 kph), while Sinner has produced a series of well-placed aces at slightly slower speeds.

But Sinner began to read Zverev’s performance better in the second tiebreaker and Zverev began to miss the lead.

“He showed again why he is the best player in the world,” said Zverev.

Sinner produced 58 winners to Zverev’s 49 and had just 25 unforced errors to Zverev’s 45.

Zverev led 17-15 in aces.

The growth of Paris

Amid the sweltering heat and humidity in Paris in late May, Sinner ended his 30-fight winning streak after coming within one game of defeating Juan Manuel Cerundolo, ranked No. 56.

Conditions were cool in south-west London for the final, with clear skies and a temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 Celsius) but also a breeze – which led to a series of photos taken by both players.

Sini underwent a medical in Milan after the loss in Paris and did not play another official match until Wimbledon, where he had to make two comebacks in a five-set race against Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round.

Sinner did not drop a set until the final, as he defeated Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

Despite losing in the final, Zverev will leapfrog Alcaraz to the No. 2 ranking on Monday.

Alcaraz missed the French Open and Wimbledon this year due to a right wrist injury.
