LeBron James: Which teams will compete with the Golden State Warriors to sign the NBA star following the exit of the Los Angeles Lakers | NBA news

LeBron James may be 41 years old and at the end of his historic NBA career, but his decision to leave the Los Angeles Lakers and choose a new team will still be the biggest story in sports this summer.
After eight years with the Lakers, a season that brought him one NBA title in 2020, James decided he wanted the ‘last dance’ elsewhere, and his status as a free agent means he can go to any team he likes for any salary he chooses to accept.
Given how James and his family seem to have settled in Los Angeles, with his son Bronny playing alongside him on the Lakers since 2024, most thought he would be content to see out his career in purple and gold.
In the hours since his exit from the Lakers was confirmed, James’ camp has already leaked to the US media that the most important thing for him is to have a realistic chance to compete for a fifth NBA title.
Although the coming days are not expected to deal with the chaos of James’ free agency of 2010, when his infamous TV special ‘The Decision’ saw him leave the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat, this latest race for his signature will dominate the US sports media.
With Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors emerging as the early favorite to sign James, Sky Sports explores his best and most realistic options.
The Golden State Warriors
Before James’ Lakers even came out with confirmation, rumors had started that the Warriors were making a play to sign him.
That was triggered by their own four-time NBA champion and All-Star Draymond Green opting out of an option on his contract for next season to allow the team to sign James and trade for another star.
There were suggestions that James was willing to go to Golden State only if they stopped trading with the Washington Wizards for his former Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, but that would be a challenge for the Warriors to achieve.
Davis or not, the chance to play with Curry, the greatest shooter of all time and the most recognizable face of the last decade and beyond alongside James, will be very appealing.
Their partnership – along with a few other stars – on the winning USA team in the 2024 Olympics has created a lot of excitement, and the pairing at this stage of their careers will make almost every Warriors game feel like an All-Star contest.
The question here is whether James believes they have enough to win a championship, as the 38-year-old Curry is also in the twilight of his career and has struggled to stay healthy in recent years.
Whether it’s Davis or someone else, the Warriors may need to make a trade for another key piece to convince James they can win another title with them.
The Cleveland Cavaliers
The first two return options available to James are in the third division with his hometown team.
After spending the first seven years of his NBA career with the Cavs after being drafted by them in 2003, James returned in 2014 and would go on to lead Cleveland to a title in 2016.
Unlike the first time around, he left the Cavaliers to join the Lakers on good terms, and there’s no clear reason why he can’t come back.
The Cavaliers have built a strong roster, finishing in the top four of the Eastern Conference during the regular season the past four years, but have not been able to get over the hump and reach the NBA Finals.
They gave it their best effort by reaching the Eastern Conference Finals earlier this year, but a 4-0 loss to the eventual champion New York Knicks left them feeling very far away.
Adding James to a roster that includes Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and young star center Evan Mobley will certainly increase their chances of competing.
However, it sounds like this could be a move motivated by emotion and a chance to end his career where it started, rather than the belief that this could be his best chance at a title shot.
San Antonio Spurs
Given that it is very unlikely that James would want to join the newly crowned champion Knicks, given the criticism he would face for joining the best team in the league and ‘ring chasing’, his surest way to succeed in the title race would be to join the losers, the San Antonio Spurs.
Spurs have the youngest talent in the league, led by 22-year-old Frenchman Victor Wembanyama, who has been the hottest prospect since James entered the league more than 20 years ago.
Wembanyama has already reached a high level by leading his team to the NBA Finals in his first play-off appearance, and he is joined by other incredibly talented youngsters such as Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.
What they lacked most in the NBA Finals was experience and a cool head to manage games, several of which they gave valuable leads to.
As a basketball veteran, James would be a great fit for a team that has earned its reputation over the past 30 years by playing the game the right way.
The continued prominence in the organization of former Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who maintains a strong relationship with James after coaching him to Olympic glory with Team USA, could be a boon.
The Miami Heat
Another option for James to return to one of his former teams would be the Miami Heat, with whom he won back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013.
Perhaps the biggest obstacle to this move is that James’ relationship with Heat team president Pat Riley reportedly fell apart near the end of his time in Miami, and has never really been mended.
However, few would have expected James to return to Cleveland after the vitriol he was subjected to inside and outside the Cavaliers organization after his first trip there, so nothing is impossible!
In basketball terms, the Heat recently made a big trade for two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, pairing the Greek Freak with James’ USA teammate Bam Adebayo.
The two are two of the best defensive players in the league, and could give James the luxury — which he probably needs at this point in his career — of being able to focus more of his attention on offense.
The trio’s combination of size and strength can’t be matched, and will undoubtedly make for a fascinating basketball experiment.
Perhaps the biggest thing for the Heat is the continued presence of their coach Erik Spoelstra, the longest-serving coach in the league, who led James to championships with the team more than a decade ago.
The two are understood to have maintained a strong relationship, and Spoelstra may have been the key to convincing James to return to Miami.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Minnesota isn’t the NBA’s most glamorous destination, but James’ basketball equivalent of the Timberwolves will undoubtedly be up there with the most exciting in the league.
The Timberwolves also recently made a big trade, bringing in guard LaMelo Ball to play alongside Anthony Edwards – the most popular young American player in the league.
Along with two star guards, the Timberwolves have one of the league’s best wings in Jaden McDaniels and a top center in Rudy Gobert, with a solid amount of depth around them.
James can undoubtedly step right into the starting five to create one of the most promising teams in the league.
Key to the Timberwolves’ pursuit will be the interest of 24-year-old Edwards, who was James’ teammate on the USA team that won gold medals at the last Olympics.
