Open Qualifiers – Final: Sergio Garcia, Danny Willett among big winners not to be missed but qualified for Royal Birkdale? | Golf News

Former Masters champions Sergio Garcia and Danny Willett both failed to secure a place in the 154th Open through to Final Qualifying, as YouTube star Wesley Bryan also missed out.
20 major invitationals were up for grabs across the one-day event, played over 36 holes and split across four UK venues – Burnham & Berrow, Dundonald Links, Royal Cinque Ports and West Lancashire.
The top five players at each site will now appear at The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale from July 16-19.live on Sky Sportswhere Scottie Scheffler returns as defending champion and Rory McIlroy will be among those looking to win the Claret Jug.
Open runner-up Garcia finished seven strokes out of the qualifying places in West Lancashire, blaming the lasagne for lunch following an opening round 68 and three-over 75.
“I had a little food there in the players’ lounge and it didn’t feel good,” Garcia told the media. “I only ate lasagne and I just felt nauseous all over the front nine. In the afternoon, I felt like I was going to vomit profusely from every hole.”
Willett was three strokes better than Garcia but fell short after rounds of 71 and 69, while five-time DP World Tour winner Matt Wallace also missed out after withdrawing in his second round.
Sam Bairstow topped the leaderboard in West Lancashire on 10 under, ahead of Kazuma Kobori, Jose Luis Ballester and Germany’s Tiger Christensen, nicknamed Tiger Woods, while Matthew Jordan claimed last place following a birdie on the second extra play hole.
Wesley Bryan, a former PGA Tour player who turned on YouTube as part of ‘Bryan Bros Golf’, missed a seven-foot par putt on his 36th hole that would have seen him join the play-off for fifth and final place in West Lancashire.
A closing bogey saw him finish tied for sixth on seven under, with his brother George Bryan on two under, while James Nicholas – a Korn Ferry Tour player with a huge social media following – topped Burnham & Berrow.
LIV Golf’s Caleb Surratt – part of Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton’s team – was among the qualifiers in the same place, as Marc Leishman failed to qualify. Royal Birkdale member Matt Baldwin was among those shortlisted at Dundonald Links.
Three-time DP World Tour winner Antoine Rozner and LIV Golf’s Peter Uihlein both advanced at the Royal Cinque Ports, where Matt Southgate won Final Qualifying for the sixth time as Luke Poulter – son of Ryder Cup legend Ian Poulter – fell short after rounds of 75 and 71.
