Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy appeared to shrug off questions about Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier on Sunday, saying she was “misinformed” about her race when pressed about past controversial comments.

“All I’m saying is that this party should have a real contest of ideas, and I don’t think our defense of incrementalism has worked,” the Connecticut Democrat told NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“I don’t care about ideological competition, and I just don’t know that we’ve had it so that the voters have been satisfied. The apparent row comes after Murphy insisted that the Democratic Party adopt a “big tent” approach and embrace a broader range of voters, including traditional Democrats, Trump voters disillusioned with the country’s leadership and those who lean on the left.

NBC’s Ryan Nobles, filling in for host Kristen Welker, confronted Murphy about a campaign ad from Chevalier, the incumbent Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat.

This ad shows Mamdani’s colleague’s famous history of controversial stories on social media that have since been deleted, including his disparagement of former President Joe Biden, where he even called him a rapist.
