The Washington Post boasted that the Justice Department planned to “compel” reporters to testify before a grand jury but withdrew the subpoenas after the paper challenged it.

The Post published a story Tuesday citing “a Justice Department official familiar with the matter” that reporter Ellen Nakashima received a subpoena this spring “related to sensitive reporting on a national security issue.”

The Post reported that the Jeff Bezos-owned newspaper was “fighting a request by the Eastern District of Virginia’s district court in closed proceedings when the government withdrew Nakashima’s subpoena.” This newspaper also reported that “the investigation that led to the summons is not clear” except that it is related to national security.

“The unauthorized subpoena of our reporter Ellen Nakashima – a clear violation of constitutionally guaranteed freedom of the press – was another sign of the government’s desire to force journalists to be the tools of its investigation. We will continue to stand fully behind The Washington Post’s journalism and fight all attempts by any administration to violate our First Amendment rights,” a spokesperson for the Washington Post told Fox News Digital.

The Post described Nakashima as “a veteran national security reporter who, during the Trump administration, reported on the country’s most powerful intelligence officials, the Iran conflict and deadly U.S. military strikes on boats allegedly carrying illegal drugs.”

Editor-in-Chief Matt Murray also spoke about the tragedy with Post staff on Tuesday morning.

“With the news coming out and the subpoena withdrawn, I want to reiterate our unwavering support for the First Amendment rights enshrined in our constitution, the legal protection afforded to journalists, and our unwavering support for our journalists and freedom of the press. I also want to thank our legal colleagues who have worked so hard on behalf of Ellen and The Post,” Murray News wrote on Digital Fox.

“This agency stands behind each of you. It is in the DNA of The Washington Post to ask, investigate, expose and report,” he continued. “That’s why we’re here and we’ll continue to do it.”

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Post reported that three Wall Street Journal reporters who also report on national security also received subpoenas.

“The Justice Department also withdrew subpoenas from the Wall Street Journal, which the news organization challenged in the same court, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss non-public proceedings. No reporters have testified before the grand jury,” the official said, the Post reported.

The WSJ did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
