The Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes is finally over, as the two-time MVP is headed to the Miami Heat next season.

The Heat have been chasing a star for some time, missing out on the league’s stars even though they are always competing in the playoffs. Now, Miami finally has a legitimate top-five player in the league to help the team chase a fourth NBA Finals appearance.

Of course, the trade means that Miami’s roster will look very different next year, as key players have left to replace Antetokounmpo. The Heat will now focus on building around Antetokounmpo to try and produce a contending roster.

Here’s a look at how Antetokounmpo fits into the Heat’s lineup next year.

Antetokounmpo fits right into the Heat’s powerhouse alongside Bam Adebayo, creating one of the best frontcourts in the league. Bobby Portis comes along with the Greek Freak, given a depth option at the forward position.

However, the team now needs help in the backcourt, especially after losing Tyler Herro in the deal. Also outside the door are Jaime Jacquez Jr., Kel’el Ware and Kasparas Jakucionis.

What Giannis Antetokounmpo brings to the Heat program

Antetokounmpo immediately gives the Heat their No. 1 option. 1 to be paired with Bam Adebayo, who profiles better as a second option. Antetokounmpo becomes the Heat’s best player since the era of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade and makes Miami a contender in the Eastern Conference.

Both Antetokounmpo and Adebayo are strong defensive players and could form the best defensive frontcourt in the league. Antetokounmpo was at his best defensive position near center back, a role Adebayo could handle well. Combine that with Erik Spoelstra’s coaching, and the Heat should be an elite defensive team.

The question will come down to the team’s offense, however. Antetokounmpo’s best years in Milwaukee came when he played with four shooters, including Brook Lopez at center. In seven years, Lopez averaged just under one three-point attempt per game while shooting 35.7 percent from deep, a strong number that forced defenses to stretch the floor for Antetokounmpo, a career three-point shooter of 28.5 percent.

Unlike Lopez, Adebayo is not known for his shooting ability. From 2017-24, Adebayo shot less than one three-pointer per game and went 25-for-104 overall from deep, as he spent most of his time near the basket. Over the past two years, Adebayo has tried to expand his game to include threes, and he attempted 400 top threes last year but only made 31 percent. For this pairing to work, one of Adebayo or Antetokounmpo has to match the depth.

Additionally, even though Davion Mitchell and Norman Powell are great players, Miami needs a more reliable ball player to match up with Antetokounmpo. When the Bucks won the 2021 NBA Finals, Antetokounmpo played alongside Jrue Holiday, who was a key addition to the season.
