Tennis star Serena Williams has been given a doubles wild card along with her sister Venus into Wimbledon, which starts on June 29.
Serena – winner of 23 Grand Slam titles – played her first match since 2022 last week HSBC Championships at Queen’s Clubwinning alongside Victoria Mboko before the Canadian was forced to withdraw after injuring her knee in the singles match.
Serena, 44, has won seven Wimbledon titles and six doubles titles alongside older sister Venus, winning her last title in their last appearance together a decade ago.
After almost four years away, Serena will continue her comeback in Berlin – live on Sky Sports Tennis at around 4.30pm on Tuesday.
The American champion will team up with world No. 10 Karolina Muchova in the women’s doubles against Giuliana Olmos and Erin Routliffe at the Steffi Graf Stadion.
Serena could still be given a shot at a major tournament with one final WTA draw yet to be announced.
Dan Evans, that’s who criticized the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) for lacking “class” and not giving him a wild card at the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club this week. Before retiring, he will play doubles with 2023 Wimbledon boys singles champion Henry Searle.
Nick Kyrgios, the last of the 2022 singles, will play alongside Alexander Bublik.
Maja Chwalinska was awarded after her exceptional run at the French Open, where she reached the final after a breakthrough.
Among the big wildcards in men’s singles are three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, who may retire at the end of the season, and former Wimbledon semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov.
Murray rules on Williams’ return
Judy Murray said Serena played at a “very high level” at Queen’s and was impressed with her performance after four years away from professional tennis.
“I’m not sure that anyone expected him to come back when he retired, I think he came back in 2022,” he said. Sky Sports.
“He’s got two kids of his own now, but he’s been playing a big role; he’s obviously got himself in really good shape, fit, ready to compete again.
“I think he might have missed you a lot too.
“I saw a clip where he said it was important for his children to see him play, so they know who he is and what he does.
“I really liked that her husband and children were in court and greeted her when she left.
“But she showed that she is still playing at a surprisingly high level, playing doubles with Victoria Mboko at the WTA event in Queen’s, and she won her first match!
“And the support of the big crowd there, and a lot of fans behind her, it’s great, another mom is back in the game with success, brilliant.”
