Pau Cubarsi reveals the dream scenario of the World Cup and facing Lionel Messi: ‘If it can be done…’

Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi has established himself as one of the brightest young defenders in world football, but the youngster is showing no signs of slowing down.

As Spain prepares for their first FIFA World Cup match, the 19-year-old spoke to Mundo Deportivo about his growing ties to club and country, his admiration for Lionel Messi, and his ambitions to make a big impact on football’s biggest stage.

Having enjoyed a rapid rise over the past two seasons, Cubarsi heads into the tournament as one of Spain’s most important defensive figures despite his young age.

While many players may feel the pressure of expectations, the Barcelona star seems ready to embrace them.

Accepting the great responsibility of Barcelona and Spain

Speaking about his growth, the defender made it clear that age is not what he focuses on when he enters the field.

When discussing the leadership qualities he continues to work on, Cubarsi explained,

“At the end of the day age is just a number, when you are on the field no one looks at your age but what you can do well.

“And I’m working on it and I’m improving to be a better leader, because it helps me stay focused and it helps the team by giving good instructions.”

The Spanish team includes a strong Barcelona squad, something Cubarsi believes helps the national team build chemistry ahead of the tournament.

“Yes, there are many of us Spaniards and we are very happy to be able to help the national team.

“Some of my teammates were left out and I feel very sad for them, but others came in with incredible enthusiasm and we want to do well to bring joy to those who were not there.”

Puyol comparisons and Messi praises

Another thing that Cubarsi has had to do is adapt Barcelona’s style of play and Spain’s style under Luis de la Fuente.

When asked about the difference in defense between the two teams, the young defender admitted,

“No, two different styles in Barça and in the national team.”

The defender also showed former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol and his famous World Cup semi final goal.

Asked if he would like to produce the same period in Spain, Cubarsi replied,

“If possible, it would be great, first of all because we would be in the semi-finals and that would be great.

“And if, on top of that, I can help the team in that way, it would be amazing.”

One of the most interesting parts of the interview came when Cubarsi was asked about the possibility of facing Lionel Messi.

The Barcelona academy graduate revealed that the Argentine icon remains one of his biggest football idols.

“Yes I am, he has been my idol since I was young, I have never seen him in person even on the field.

“I would have preferred to play with him in my team, but if I am against him, I will do my best and try to defend against him as much as I can.,” he concluded.
