FIFA World Cup 2026 schedule: Start times, dates, how to watch

The biggest World Cup in history is here. Over 104 matches in 38 days in 16 cities that will host three countries, the world champions will be crowned. This 48-team tournament is a tournament unlike any other. Its field includes all of Italy bar former champions and the first four players: Cabo Verde, Curacao, Jordan and Uzbekistan.

As hosts for the second time, the USA faces perhaps the highest expectations ever placed on a World Cup. The so-called golden generation are struggling to build on the track that followed their run to the playoffs in 2022 and now face pressure to capture the nation’s imagination. Will they do so? Will the same happen to fellow athletes Mexico and Canada?

Teams to watch out for early on include holders Argentina in what will surely be Lionel Messi’s last dance at the biggest stage of all. It will be the same for many other stars, especially his old rival Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s hard to believe that Neymar, Luka Modric or maybe even Mohamed Salah will have any left in their tank by 2030. Meanwhile, France will be looking to regain the title they won in 2018 and lost in a dramatic final four years later. Spain are the favourites, while Brazil, Portugal and England are sure to be among the contenders.

In short, this promises to be a World Cup as full of stories, drama and excitement as ever. Here’s how you can watch it:
