Messi requested to be substituted in the 73rd minute of Inter Miami’s rain-soaked game against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday, May 24. He was seen grabbing his leg just before making the request.
“He’s tired,” Inter Miami manager Guillermo Hoyos told reporters after the 6-4 win. “Tiring. He was tired. The field was heavy, wasn’t it? When you’re in doubt, you always try not to take risks.”
The victory was the last game before the 2026 World Cup break. Although Argentina’s roster has not been officially finalized, Messi is expected to play in the sixth World Cup this summer. The tournament will begin in June across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Messi won his first World Cup in 2022, capping a career that puts him in the discussion as one of the greatest of all time.
