Body camera footage captured the dramatic rescue of a child trapped in a flooded car Saturday as water appeared to sweep the vehicle toward a creek in Beeville, Texas.

The incident, which occurred about 100 kilometers southeast of San Antonio, occurred as strong storms dumped rain across the region, quickly turning roads dangerous.

According to the police, the heavy rain covered the area that was crossing the small water, and the car got stuck when it entered the crossing.

“Recently, police and firefighters responded after a vehicle entered a flooded intersection and was pushed by the rushing water,” the Beeville Police Department said in a Facebook post Saturday.

Officials warned that the situation deteriorated within minutes, noting that the rapid rain left no time to close the barriers before the vehicle reached the crossing.

A fire officer assisting at the scene tried to knock down the driver, who ended up not seeing the workers in time, said the police.

The footage shows the car in trouble as water levels rise rapidly, reaching the top of its tyres. The police officer in the video is also heard reporting that the car was being pushed towards the stream by the rushing water.

While the workers were checking the situation, the driver could be heard shouting to a nearby police officer that there was a child inside the car.

The policeman then ran through the flood and opened the door and took out the stroller carrying the baby.

After carrying the child back to safety, one respondent was seen quickly using a jacket to protect the child from the continuous rain.

“We are thankful that no one was injured,” said the police, indicating that the driver was also safely rescued from the car.

Beeville police used the video as a stark warning about the dangers of flooding, stressing that “what may seem temporary one minute can be dangerous the next.”

“It doesn’t take a lot of moving water to push a car off the road, and by the time you realize how dangerous it is, it may be too late,” said the Department.

“If the barriers are placed near the road or where you cross, please do not drive near them. There is a reason. Wandering around the designated areas not only puts people’s lives at risk, but is also a crime.”

Motorists are urged to slow down in heavy rain and avoid flooded areas, including river crossings and other low-lying roads.

“There is no job, shortcut, or place you should risk your life or the safety of your family,” police added.
