Cuban-American lawmakers warned Saturday that humanitarian and economic tensions in Cuba have brought the island closer to the brink of collapse, saying the Trump administration has a small window to step up pressure on Havana and potentially change the future of the Western Hemisphere.

“We’ve never been this close to seeing change and this regime being kicked out,” Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., told Fox News, explaining his message to the Cuban people.

“There is a lot of hope in Cuba right now… We have the right president, we have the right Secretary of State,” said Gimenez. “You have three Cuban Americans and a very small number in the House of Representatives who are working for your cause, and we will never forget you, so my message is … it will happen.”

Gimenez, along with fellow Florida Reps. Maria Salazar and Mario Diaz-Balart, joined “My View with Lara Trump” for an exclusive sit-down interview discussing the topic.

There, they highlighted widespread blackouts, energy shortages and growing unrest on the island while establishing Cuba not just as a humanitarian crisis, but as a growing national security threat that sits 90 miles from the US coast.

We are only 90 miles from Miami, a city that I damaged, by Western standards 65 years ago, a group of thieves took that, but now President Trump, after 10 administrations, is returning what was possible to the Cubans,” said Salazar.

Diaz-Balart emphasized that rapprochement as a threat to US national security, stressing that President Donald Trump is equally aware and will not stand idly by.

“The reason we have a lot of hope is that this president will not continue to allow a regime 90 miles away that has planes that could hit the United States, that holds refugees in US law, and, let’s not forget that now, just this week, we remember the killing of three Americans and one US citizen who were killed suddenly by the Cuban government,” he said.

“Nobody was willing to do anything about it until Donald Trump.”

Salazar emphasized that argument, pointing to the Trump administration’s focus on the Western Hemisphere as evidence that the White House is willing to deal aggressively with hostile regimes in the region.

“Look at what he did with Maduro. That was the mother of evil in the Western Hemisphere because, from the point of view of drugs, there would be no Venezuela if Cuba had not sent a letter of repression,” said Salazar. “But thank God it will be over soon.”
