Jermod McCoy’s knee injury has been compared to the former NFL star coming out of college

It’s been almost a month since the first round of the 2026 NFL draft, and the injury to Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Jermod McCoy has been a hot topic of conversation ever since. However, we still don’t really know what McCoy’s status is this season and beyond. It has been reported that the Tennessee product will likely need a second career-threatening surgery, but it appears that the entire situation is still very much up in the air.
The lack of clarity is what caused McCoy, who was considered a top-15 talent going into last month’s tryout, to fall in the fourth round and into the lap of the Raiders. Granted, Las Vegas had to move up one spot to get him, and that was because the former Volunteer wouldn’t be on the board for long, according to The California Post Vincent Bonignore, who also shed light on the injury situation.
“I have discussed with different managers of the department who have revealed what affects their minds [McCoy]and again, he didn’t last very long in the fourth round. People were ready to jump,” Bonsignore said as the guest continued Raider Nation Radio “JT Brick”.
“They’ve raised a red flag at that point in the draft for the entire league. So the Raiders are doing a good job of beating everybody and the way I’ve been told it’s not a problem ‘right now’. It’s a problem that could last a long time, its length. And Todd Gurley was a name that was brought up for a long time in the NFL.”
“But then the issue of longevity came into play [for Gurley]. People are looking for all these knee signs. Is it good? Are you ready to go? That’s not it. It is a matter of longevity.”
Gurley tore his ACL in mid-November of his final college football season. Unlike McCoy, the injury did not affect his draft status, as he was still taken 10th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals. Louis Rams. Gurley had to sit out the first two games of his rookie season but bounced back quickly, winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, making three All-Pro teams in four years and being the 2017 NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

However, the former Bulldog’s injury in college caused him to suffer from severe inflammation and arthritis in his knee. That led to the Rams releasing Gurley two years after signing him to a record-breaking contract extension, and he spent one season with the Atlanta Falcons before his career ended after just six seasons and at just 26 years old.
Of course, Bonignore doesn’t make one-to-one comparisons, and every situation is different when it comes to medicine. But if McCoy follows the same path as Gurley, the Raiders will be looking to get three to four years of really high play from the cornerback before long-term knee problems start to kick in.
