Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US, Gokul Kunnath, an NRI from Atlanta, recalls that from the early days of his visit, the BJP leader was known for his simple lifestyle. He believes in a minimalist lifestyle. This trait was visible even in his youth, especially in his walking.
In 1997, Modi visited the US to attend some events organized by the Indian diaspora. He was working as the national general secretary of the BJP at that time.
During the trip, Modi met Gokul Kunnath, who had gone to pick him up at the Atlanta airport. Like many people who expected to stay for a long time, he thought that Modi would carry a lot of burdens. However, he was surprised when Modi carried a small bag the size of a wallet.
Kunnath thought that the remaining luggage must still be coming off the plane. When he asked if the luggage was on the way, Modi calmly replied, “There is no luggage.” This is all I have for the trip.”
This time left a lasting impression on Kunnath. It shows Modi’s friendly way of life—beyond simplicity. It showed his humility and the discipline of pracharak, living without excess.
This minimalistic approach continues to define Modi’s life, even today, as India’s Prime Minister, Kunnath said.
