Michael Carrick: Man Utd head coach wins Manager of the Season award despite managing just 15 Premier League games | Football news

Man Utd manager Michael Carrick is one of the frontrunners for the Premier League Manager of the Season award – after just 15 league games.

Carrick, who replaced Ruben Amorim in January, is still temporarily in charge at Old Trafford – although the club are ready to open talks over a full-time role.

He joins the list of six men and including Keith Andrews, Mikel Arteta, Pep Guardiola, Andoni Iraola again Regis Le Bris to get the top prize.

Carrick has impressed since taking over for Portugal, winning 10 and drawing three of his 15 games in charge. If the season had started when he took over, United would sit one point behind leaders Manchester City.

Andrews refused to disagree with Brentford, who were tipped to be relegated after losing their manager, captain and two top goalscorers last summer to struggle in Europe – and instead led them to a European challenge that could leave them in Champions League football next season.

Arteta and Guardiola go into the final two weekends of the season with both heading to Arsenal and Manchester City, while outgoing Bournemouth boss Iraola turned around a difficult summer at the Vitality Stadium to lead the club to another memorable campaign.

Sunderland are on track to enjoy the best season of any newly promoted club since Sheffield United finished ninth under Chris Wilder in 2019/20.

Nominees have also been announced for the Football Writers’ Player of the Year award Bruno Fernandes shortlisted alongside the Arsenal trio Gabriel, Declan Rice again David RayaManchester City Antoine Semenyo again Erling HaalandNottm Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Brentford ahead Igor Thiagosecond top scorer in the Premier League.

Among the eight players vying for the best young player award this season are two from Bournemouth Alex Scott again Eli Junior KroupiManchester City summer signing Ryan Cherki and the scorer of two Carabao Cup finals Nico O’ReillyWest Ham midfielder Mateus FernandesNewcastle and England playing left back Lewis HallBrentford-right back Michael Kayode and Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
