The Columbus Blue Jackets plan to recall Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau for the rest of the upcoming NHL season.
Johnny Gaudreau has played with the Blue Jackets for the past two campaigns following eight-plus seasons with the Calgary Flames. He and his younger brother, Matthew — a hockey teammate at Boston College — were struck and killed by an alleged drunken driver while riding their bikes near their hometown in New Jersey last month.
Blue Jackets players will wear the stickers on their helmets beginning Monday in the team’s preseason opener at the Buffalo Sabers through the 2024-25 season. The blue decal with gray trim will feature their last name surrounded by two doves and Johnny’s jersey number 13 and Matthew’s college number, 21, in white.
When the Blue Jackets met the St. Louis Blues two days later in their first preseason home game, there will be a moment of silence.
And when the regular season starts on Oct. 10 to the Minnesota Wild, and throughout the season, the Blue Jackets will wear Johnny’s No. 13 in that jersey.
Additional activities honoring the brothers are expected to be announced later.
