The Empire State Building hosts the annual run, Presented by Starbucks and Powered by the Challenged Athletes Foundation

NEW YORK – The Empire State Building (ESB) hosts 46th The Annual Empire State Building Run-Up, presented by Starbucks and powered by the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). In several designated heats, more than 650 runners from around the world raced up the building’s 1,576 steps to reach the finish line at the iconic 86.th Floor Observatory.

Ryoji Watanabe of Japan took first place in the Men’s Elite heat with a time of 10:34, just ahead of second-placed Wai Ching Soh of Malaysia, and Italy’s Fabio Ruga in third.

“This course was very difficult, but I wanted to win,” said Watanabe. “I did it and I’m very happy.”

Germany’s Monica Carl placed first in the Women’s Elite heat with a time of 13:30, ahead of Japan’s Yuko Tateishi in second and Germany’s Verena Schmitz in third.

“This is the old stair run again [ESB] it’s my favorite tower,” said Carl. “It was a big, big dream to win this race and now it has come true.”

Some of the hot spots in the race include the tenants of the Empire State Building, the media, and salespeople for leading real estate companies.

Seattle-based coffee company Starbucks served as the first presenting sponsor. The Empire State Building is home to the new Starbucks Reserve® flagship store covering three floors and 23,000 square meters.

CAF is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing access to sports and physical activity for people of all ages with chronic physical disabilities. CAF is back as ESBRU’s official charity partner with a designated unit that brings together athletes with permanent physical disabilities and CAF fans who raise funds to improve lives through sport.

In the evening, the Empire State Building lit its world-famous lights in green to celebrate the 46th.th Annual Run-Up.
