The San Francisco 49ers have opted to sign veteran kicker Matthew Wright to fill in for the injured Jake Moody, according to a reliable source on Tuesday. Moody, who has a sprained ankle, will sit out Thursday night’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

In addition to Wright, the 49ers also considered kickers Randy Bullock, Riley Patterson, Anders Carlson, and Matt Coghlin. The team is finding ways to compensate for Moody’s absence following his injury, which occurred in the second quarter of Sunday’s 24-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

With less than five minutes left in the second quarter, Moody was injured. The incident occurred after 49ers defensive end Jordan Elliott blocked a field goal attempt, which was returned 61 yards for a touchdown by quarterback Deommodore Lenoir.
Moody had to start the next snap, as he has successfully done in nearly all of his 27 games this season. However, against the wind, he ended up under the ball a bit, giving Cardinals punter DeeJay Dallas a chance to make a comeback.
As Dallas drove past the 49ers’ first line of defense, he met Moody on the left side of the field. Trying to fight back, Moody was pushed back, causing his body to curl over his right leg, which he used for a kick. Quickly showing frustration, Moody threw his helmet to the ground, as he realized that this incident was similar to the last one when he broke his leg in the eighth grade.
