It has now been sixteen years since the first publication of the Bitcoin whitepaper on cryptography. Satoshi went and dropped the paper in a place that would be very well received, where all the cypherpunks and cryptography geniuses who had been obsessed with digital currency systems for years were hanging out and constantly discussing that and other related topics.
The whitepaper was nowhere near a comprehensive explanation of the Bitcoin protocol. It didn’t explain the scripting language at all, it didn’t go into the algorithm for difficulty resolution, it just vaguely explained the concept of one. It didn’t define specific protocol blocks that are distributed across the network (just a vague definition), or the difference between consensus and policy rules. It did not describe the rollout schedule or the total supply, just that it may be limited to some arbitrary value and eventually end the rollout to support the network based on fees alone.
No actual implementation details or actual system details were explained in any way. Just a general concept of a secure proof-of-work blockchain and how it can work without a third party central company taking on the role of record keeper of transaction history to prevent double spending.
This is still a serious document given all its flaws when compared to the Bitcoin protocol itself as a whole. Using proof-of-work to solve the problem of double-spending is a profound development that set Bitcoin apart from previous digital currency efforts, such as bitgold or e-cash.
While the white paper itself doesn’t come close to enough information to restart the protocol as it stands today, it is enough to replicate the same plan enough. It’s your heart, bits and pieces that really are it was necessary the existence of a process that we know has been brought to earth. Despite its lack of detail and clarity, it will stand the test of time as one of the most important academic papers produced in the 21st century.
Everything that is brought into the world starts with an idea, and the ideas in this paper are really deep in the effects and consequences they have had, and will continue to have on the world around us.
Happy White Paper Day.
