You want to feel safe at home. That is just the bedrock of life. You need a place that makes you feel relaxed, calm, and excited to face life’s challenges. But, what happens when the home is not safe? What if your security is challenged by a mysterious presence that just pops up and starts taunting you? It’s not a sweet thought, and that’s why it’s also a great premise for a movie.
It is the basis of A Woman in the Yarddirected by Jaume Collet-Serra (Go ahead, dark Adam), opening March 28. Starring Danielle Deadwyler (Station Eleven, Till) as a mother of two who lost her husband in a car accident. Things seem bad enough but suddenly a mysterious woman dressed in black appears in their yard. And he’s sitting there. Check out the hilarious trailer Woman in the Yard.
It’s like a home invasion movie but worse. Home invasion movies are scary because they are situations where the safety and sanctity of your home is threatened. Here however, there is less home invasion and more home harassment. The woman sitting in the courtyard, warning the character that “Today is the day,” creates a frenzy of madness, fear and longing. We are very much here for you.
So what is a woman’s deal? Where are you from? What did he want? Universal’s official plot description gives us a little tease: “Ramona takes a woman (Okwui Okpokwasili; The Exorcist: Believer, Julie Taymor’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream) is lost or out of his mind, but as the woman crawls closer to the house, it becomes clear that she is not a normal person and her intentions are not peaceful. Now Ramona must come together to protect herself and her children from the hands of a woman who will not leave them alone. ” Well, “is he creeping closer to the house?” No, no, no. It doesn’t like this. Not even one.
We’re guessing it’s the ghost of someone involved in a car accident, right? Or maybe something creepier and smarter? We’ll find out on March 28.
