Waymo’s self-driving cars are coming soon to these Southern cities

Waymo, the self-driving car company owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet, already operates autonomous vehicles in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix, and will soon be available in Atlanta and Austin.

The Georgia and Texas Waymo experience, which will be launched early next year, will be slightly different than what passengers in California and Arizona experience. Thanks to a partnership between former rivals Waymo and Uber, riders in Atlanta and Austin will have to use the Uber app to hail a robo-car (for rides in Phoenix they can use Uber or The Waymo One app, while the service in LA and San Francisco has no Uber component). Even if they can request Waymo through the Uber app, users in Austin and Atlanta won’t be guaranteed, Forbes reports. Riders can opt out of Waymo in those cities or update their settings to never get a self-driving car.

Uber will “manage and deploy a fleet of Waymo electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles that will grow to hundreds over time,” according to a statement from Waymo. “Riders who request UberX, Uber Green, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric may be matched with Waymo on an eligible trip.”

Uber will handle Waymo’s Atlanta and Austin depots, as well as cleaning and servicing the vehicles. Waymo will remain in charge of vehicle testing and operation, including roadside assistance and passenger support functions, including a “Support” button located on the passenger side screen.

Waymo isn’t the only autonomous car company with a tie-up with Uber, as General Motors’ Cruise vehicles will soon be powered by the Uber app. The Waymo deal may have something to do with the company becoming Alphabet’s loss leader, potentially costing the parent company billions in losses, according to the Associated Press.

While a Cruise vehicle fatally injured a pedestrian in San Francisco last year, Waymo’s vehicles have a better, but imperfect, safety record and make 100,000 rides a week in LA, San Francisco, and Phoenix, reports AP.
