Waqf row: Parliamentary panel chief visits Karnataka amid BJP’s global jihad case

The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Jagdambika Pal, met a delegation of farmers in Karnataka on Thursday following claims that some properties in the state were marked as Waqf properties without the consent of the owners. The BJP called these actions ‘global jihad’.

Pal said he was in the southern province “to visit to find out the truth”. BJP member Tejasvi Surya, who urged Pal to address farmers’ grievances, announced the visit on social media.

“JPC chairman on waqf kindly agreed to my request to visit Hubballi and Vijayapura on November 7 to interact with the farmers affected by the waqf action,” Surya wrote to X. “The chairman will work with farmers’ associations and mutts, and the complaints given to him will be placed before the JPC.”

Pal’s trip, however, met with consolation from some opposition MPs who said it was not done unilaterally, without consulting the committee.

“This is just an example where the chairman has decided to take this trip on his own, which is not approved by the committee while the official trip will come later,” an opposition MP told India Today TV on condition of anonymity.
