VHP leaders were arrested for disrupting Christmas celebrations at Palakkad school

The police have arrested three leaders of the Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) for disrupting the Christmas celebrations at a school in Nallepilly near here. A group of Sangh Parivar activists led by VHP leaders entered the Christmas celebration at Government UP School, Nallepilly, on Friday and threatened teachers and students.

Arrested by VHP regional secretary K. Anil Kumar, 52, of the yojag district Sushasanan Karuthethukalam, 52, and president of the panchayat committee Velayudhan Thekkumuri, 58. They were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody on Sunday.

Several cases, including spreading religious hatred, were slapped following the complaint of the principal S. Jayanti.

The incident happened on Friday when the teachers and children were celebrating Christmas after completing mid-year exams. The Sangh Parivar delegation arrived at the school while the children were cutting the cake as part of the celebration.

Apart from threatening the teachers and students, the Sangh Parivar team insisted that no celebration will be allowed except for the Sri Krishna Jayanti celebrations.

The Kerala School Teachers Association (KSTA) protested the action of the Sangh Parivar, and demanded strict action against those involved in threatening students and teachers. The executive body of the PTA at the school wants to strengthen the security of students and teachers in the school premises.
